WHETSTONE CEMETERY

Also Known As: Haven of Rest Cemetery

NW Quarter of Township 145 Range 97 Section 24
Whetstone Cemetery is located about 10 miles west of Killdeer, ND. The directions are to take Hwy 200 9 miles west of the Hwy 22 intersection. Go north 1 mile. Take a left and go west 1 ½ miles. The cemetery is marked by the old white church.

The community of Whetstone originally had a store called The Whetstone and Schwartz General Merchandise Store, a blacksmith, a lodging/house/restaurant, and a post office in 1916.

Lutheran services were held in homes and school houses until a small church was built in 1918. The Whetstone Chapel still stands at the site of the cemetery on a hill. This church, also known as Dovre Lutheran Church, held regular services until 1943.

The Haven of Rest Cemetery has a population of 82 individuals as of 5/10/2002.

Cemetery and church information were obtained from the book Dauntless Dunn II - 1989 A History of Dunn County North Dakota, and personal recollections of R. Hamilton.
