INDEPENDENCE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

The National Register of Historic Places in 2015 added the Independence Congregational Church as a place of Historic Significance. The church was built at what was originally a village called Independence. The church and cemetery are now located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation on the west side of Bureau of Indian Affairs Road 13 just .5 miles north of Hale Marinna Road.

Congregational Church missionary Charles Hall and his wife arrived on 9 May 1876 to build a Mission. The church building was built between 1910 and 1912. The bell was donated by the Broadway Tabernacle in New York City. In 1953 the Garrison Dam was closed flooding the valley to create Lake Sakakawea. The church and cemetery was moved to higher ground before the lake was created.
