During the research different names and spellings were evident; Crows Heart, Crow's Heart, Crowsheart, Crow Hearts, Crow's Heart's, Crow Heart. There is one reference to the Crows Heart born in 1856 as having a first name of Paul. Dietmar quotes one source in part as Chief Crows Heart being born in 1856 and a member of the Prairie Chicken Clan. He was a good warrior and gained acclaim as a ceremonial leader owner of a number of rights and bundles. At about the age 30 he bought the right to make fish traps from his clan uncle Old Black Bear who taught him how to make the trap and how to use it. He was the leader of his own camp and one of eleven informants for the anthropologist, Alfred Bowers in his definitive research on the Mandan and Hidatsa in the 1930's. His home was at a popular river crossing [Note: Many sources indicating it was called Village of Crows Heart, Crows Heart Landing or Crows Heart Ferry predating the western side of the Missouri River location of the Four Bears Bridge. It eventually became part of the valley in 1953 flooded when the Garrison Dam was closed to create Lake Sakakawea.] and many stopped to visit eat. Crows Heart was born in 1856. He records that his grandfather was named Moves Slowly. Crows Heart died on 26 June 1951. He is buried in Crows Heart Cemetery. Front Woman was at least one known sibling. Crows Heart Newspaper Article. Crows Heart was married, at least once, to Emily S. (Lead Woman). Lead Woman died in Dunn County on 10 April 1928. At least five children were born into this marriage; Edgar (see below), Bret (see below), Anna (see below), Frank C. (1890-before June 1911), Charles (1894), and Jane (1900). Edgar. Edgar, also known as Ed, was born on 25 March 1885. He was married at least three times; on 12 October 1915 he married, in Dunn County, Alice Blue Stone, born about 1895. She was the grandaughter of Chief Holding Eagle and Scattered Corn Woman. Two children from this marriage were Roy (1916-1989) and Richard (see below). Edgar later married Lillian Sitting Crow on 23 January 1924 and Helen White Calf on 26 June 1926. Both of these marriages were in Dunn County and any children are unknown to this writer. Helen is the daughter of White Calf and Blossom. Edgar died in Stark County on 21 July 1948 but still had his residence in Dunn County. Edgar's Burial. Roy. After Alice's death, Roy was adopted by his aunt Anna, Edgar's sister. Richard. Richard was born north of Halliday on 10 December 1917 and died on 31 October 1980. He married Marie Eleanor Lincoln in Wibaux, Wibaux County, Montana on 29 January 1944 daughter of Sam and Maria Stone Lincoln. They had several children; June, Richard "Tiny," Jr. (1957-2016), Evalon (m. Bachmier also Ronald Little Owl), Thomas, Lester, Edgar, Bruce, and Alvina (m. Wells). Obituary. Bret. Bret was married in 1907 to Margaret Bea who was born about 1886. They had one son Lester (see below). In 1910 Margaret indicated in the census she had two children but one did not survive before 1910. Margaret married others later as she had Leonard and Adelia Beauchamp children and also Belva Lockwood, and was later married until her death to Ernest Wilkinson. Margaret's burial. Lester. Lester was born on 3 April 1909 in Elbowoods, McLean County. It is unclear when his father Bret was gone but it is known that his mother, Margaret, married again. Lester married Fannie Perkins on 7 July 1914 but in 1930 and 1940 he was divorced and living with his uncle Edgar. He was living in McLean County when he enlisted in the U. S. Army on 17 June 1942 in Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was serving as a Private in Company I, 47th Infantry Regiment Combat Team in the European North African Middle Eastern Theater when he was killed in action on 8 November 1942 probably during the Operation Blackstone beach landings at Safi, Morocco. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Death Notice. Lester is buried in Crows Heart Cemetery. Anna. Anna was born on 25 March 1889. She adopted Edgar's son Roy after Alice Bluestone died. She later married James Eagle who had been married to Lester's half-sister Belva Lockwood. She died on 17 August 1975 in Stark County. Anna and James' Burial. |
