EINARSON FAMILY
JOSEPH BENJAMIN ELLIOT
Some of the information below is digested from the McHenry County, 1885-1895 History.
Joseph was born on 27 July 1845 in Maine to Ezekiel and Nancy Gray Elliott. At a young age, the family moved to Wisconsin where Joseph entered the Civil War. He enlisted on 31 October 1861 in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin and served until his mustering out on 14 July 1864 at Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi.
After the war, Joseph is a Riverman and living with his parents in Saratoga, Wood County, Wisconsin in 1870. In 1880 he is married to Anna and is a farmer in Leaf River, Wadena County, Minnesota. With them is their son, George who was born in 1876 in Wisconsin. They are still there in 1885 along with another son, Delbert B., born in the county on 14 July 1884.
By 1890 when Joseph is in the National Veterans Schedule, the family is in McHenry County. The first land patent is in Red Cross Township Sections 18 and 19 by Joseph but by 1917 Joseph and son George had land patents in several sections of Red Cross and Milroy Townships. The family history writes, "...They came by oxen and wagon to McHenry County, settling on land five miles north of Towner, on the west bank of the Mouse River, in Red Cross Township. We believe Joseph bought the land from an earlier settler. They lived in a tent, then a log cabin the first winter and later built a house. The ranch gradually expanded it to include land on both sides of the river and was called The Medicine
Lodge Ranch."
In the 1900 Census, Joseph and Anna are in Milroy Township. Family records indicate Delbert died before the Census. The census indicates Anna had four children and one surviving at the time of the census. By 1920 Joseph and Anna are living in Towner.
Their son, George, married Nellie B. Thomas in 1902. Nellie was born in Iowa in 1872. Nellie came to McHenry County to teach at the Red Cross school located near the Elliott Ranch and where she and George met. They had six children; Delbert, Howard, George, Walter, Anna May, and Vera.
