SAMUEL JONES

Samuel was born in Pennsylvania to John Jones (1790- Pennsylvania). His obituary and gravestone indicate he was born in 1819 on 20 November although many records indicate it was the year 1829.
Samuel was a very early pioneer in Dakota Territory. Shortly after the 1885 Dakota Territory census when he was in Richland County he arrived in McHenry County and in the 1890 Veterans Census he was in Towner. In 1892 he homesteaded in Section 28 in Mouse River Township and then in 1905 he settled in Section 17 outside of Denbigh in Denbigh Township. In both locations he was closely neighbored to the Rosencrans families where Hobart was married to Samuel's granddaughter Goldie (1874) and Frank was married to granddaughter Carrie (1877). In the Mouse River Township he was a neighbor to his daughter Amanda Mitchell in Sections 20 and 21.
His obituary indicates he was married three times and had three children. This writer's research could find only one wife and two children. He was married to Rebecca Rogers who was born about 1825 in Pennsylvania. Two known children were Amanda Rebecca born about 1856 in Michigan or Ohio and Elizabeth born in November 1859 in Michigan. Nothing beyond the 1860 census could be found for Rebecca and Elizabeth. Amanda married Alonzo Augusta Mitchell in Michigan. They had at least 13 children; seven of which were born in North Dakota. They were divorced. Amanda kept the homestead for awhile then moved to Montana where she died in Valley County on 23 January 1916 and Alonzo went to Canada. Two of Amanda's daughters stayed in McHenry County having married brothers Hobart and Frank Rosencrans as mentioned earlier.
Samuel enlisted into the Civil War in Red Wing, Goodhue County, Minnesota on 9 August 1862. He served as a Wagoner in Company F, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He received a disability discharge on 23 August 1863.
Samuel died on 17 December 1917 at Rugby, Pierce County. He is buried at Union Cemetery at Towner.
