CARLTON HENRY TALMADGE
Carlton was born on 4 May 1838 in Maryland, Otsego County, New York to John and Joanna Howland Talmadge; the youngest son of nine children.
He enlisted into the Civil War on 23 August 1864 in Norwich, Chenango County, New York. He served as a Private in Companies D and L in the 3rd Regiment of New York Cavalry. He mustered out on 7 June 1865 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Carlton became a homesteader in the Grand Forks area of Dakota Territory in 1882. Later in 1884 he homesteaded in Bottineau County and then in 1887 the North Dakota legislature moved eleven townships from Bottineau County to McHenry County which included Carlton's homestead. In McHenry he operated the homestead as a cattle ranch. In 1900, he sold the ranch to his son Earl.
Carlton married Mary Elizabeth Lockwood. That union produced two sons; Clarence Lockwood Talmadge [Clarence altered the surname spelling to Tallmadge] (1862-1949) and Earl B. (1870-1948).
Carlton died on 17 July 1921 in Lisbon, Ransom County and is buried in Towner. Mary moved back to their home county, Otsego, in New York where she died and is buried there. Clarence died in 1949 and is buried at Cortland County, New York.
