They lived in Hougom Township for a time then eventually bought land in Wager Township and owned the south-half of Section 13 where they remained. James was elected County Commissioner in 1904 and served for five years. His name is on the cornerstone of the courthouse at Towner, built in 1907. James died in 1944 and Ida died in 1941. James' Burial, Tombstone Photo, Links to Some Family Members Ida's Burial, Tombstone Photo, Links to Some Family Members Cora May McCombs and John James Green Cora was born in Burford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada to James and Ida McCombs on 12 March 1882. At young ages, she and her younger sister, Evaline, proved up adjoining claims northeast of Milroy in Hougom Township. On 24 June 1909 she married John James "Jack" "JJ" Green in McHenry County. Jack was born at 28 November 1867 at Ethel, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. He left Canada in 1883 for Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota then in early 1890's went to Forest River, Walsh County, North Dakota and worked as a liveryman. Jack served in 1898-1899 in the Spanish-American War in the Philippine Campaign serving as a Private in Company C, 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry where he contracted malaria and ulcers, then mustered out in 1899 at Grafton, Walsh County, North Dakota. After recovering from his illness he came to the Mouse River area and eventually homestead in Layton Township. He also owned a livery stable in Bantry and was a partner in a butcher shop in Bantry with Dan McCain. The four children of Cora and Jack are: James Bruce, Lester Claude, Carl Ross, and Verna. Cora died in 1928 and Jack died in 1944. Ida's Burial, Tombstone Photo, Links to Some Family Members Harold McCombs Harold was born in Brant County, Ontario, Canada to James and Ida McCombs on 11 June 1884. Harold came to McHenry County with his parents. On 21 December 1910 he married Anna Deming at Towner. Anna was born on in Quebec, Canada to Chauncey and Carrie Franklin Bunker Deming on 6 June 1883. Harold and Anna spent their entire married life in a residence located in Wager Township originally on his father's farm and eventually a part of a partnership with his father. Their three children all born at the farm are: Francis, Vera, and Kenneth. Harold died 25 August 1943 and Anna died 6 March 1966. Anna's Burial, Tombstone Photo, Links to Some Family Members William James McCombs William was born in Calvin, Ontario, Canada to James and Ida McCombs on 15 August 1885. William came to McHenry County with his parents. On 18 December 1912 he married Thora Solberg at Rugby in Pierce County, North Dakota. Thora was born to Christen and Anne Marie Engebretsen Solberg on 5 November 1887 in Mercer County, Minnesota. Originally William and Thora homesteaded in Shelby, Montana but because of the drouth they returned to North Dakota and settled on a farm one mile east of his father's residence where they resided for 50 years and retiring to a purchased home in Towner. To this union five daughters were born: Marie, Agnes, Florence Louisa (1922- married Bernard Dryer or Dreyer), Doris Elizabeth (1927- married James Muir), and Joyce. William died in 1974. James' Burial, Tombstone Photo, Links to Some Family Members Ida's Burial, Tombstone Photo, Links to Some Family Members Joseph Lloyd McCombs Joseph was born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada to James and Ida McCombs on 21 January 1891 and was only a year old when the family moved to McHenry County. On 24 July 1920 he married Hertha Schilling in the home of Hertha's parents north of Bantry. Hertha was born to Fred and Myrtle Parks Schilling on 16 January 1901 in Missouri Right after their marriage they moved into their farm home in Wager Township where they resided for 62 years. Their only daughter, Janet died in 1954. Harold died in 1982 and Hertha died in 1983.
