Gustav John Nehrenberg
Son of Peter J. Nehrenberg

Gustav was born on 11 May 1852 in Prussia to Peter J. and unknown Nehrenberg.
Sometime before 1875 Gustav married Ottilie Henkelman in Germany. She was born on 28 October 1853. At the time of their immigration to America on 14 June 1876 with Gustav's father Peter, their daughter Martha had been born in Germany.
In 1880 and 1885 Gustav and his family are living in Yellow Bank Township (Township 120, Range 46), Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota as farmers. Sometime after the birth of Ernest in 1890 the family moved to South Dakota. Their known children are William, Martha (1875), Gustav (1877), Carl/Charles (1878), Paul (1880), Mary (1881), Edward (1883), Lydia, Tillie (1886), Rose Pauline (1888), Ernest (1890), and Samuel (1892).
Ottilie died on 20 January 1892 and is buried at the Grant Center Evangelical United Brethern Church Cemetery located just west of Milbank, Grant County, South Dakota. This writer admits speculation that she died from complications of the birth of Samuel R.
On 2 June 1892, Gustav married Marie Louise Bloedau in Sauk County, Wisconsin. Marie was born in Prussia on 21 September 1865 to Carl and Caroline Wilhelmine Dahse Bloedau.
In 1900 the Gustav family is homesteading on Section 12, Township 152, Range 77 (Balfour Township). They probably homesteaded about 1899 based on their 1904 patent.
The known children of Gustav and Marie are Elsie (1893), Emilie (1895), Henry (1895), David (1897), Alfred (1898), Lillie (1899), Fred (1901), Sarah (1902), Theodore (1903), and Harold (1907).
By 1930 Gustav and Marie are no longer farming and are living in Anamoose. In 1940 they are in Drake. Charles received a land patent for a homestead in Sections 25 and 26 of Township 152, Range 77 in 1907. Edward received a land patent for a homestead in Section 8 of Township 153, Range 76.
Gustav died on 16 July 1947 in McHenry County and is buried in the Drake Cemetery.
After Gustav's death, Marie relocated to Canada where some of the Nehrenberg children had settled. She died in Canada on 8 May 1954 and is buried with Gustav in the Drake Cemetery.

Edward was born in Yellow Bank Township near Ortonville, Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota, on 29 July 1883. He grew to young manhood there and came via box car with his father, two brothers and some stock to the Balfour area.
They lived with the Sahr family a short while until living quarters could be provided for the rest of the family. Edward's father then sent for his wife and remaining children to join them on the homestead, the farm now [1985] owned by Arnold and Myron Knuth. Twelve children were born to Gustave and Ottilie [see above] with only Ernest still living [1985]. Edward's mother passed away in 1892. Gustave married Mary Louise Bloedau and ten half brothers and sisters were added to the brood [see above].
On 15 April 1901, Edward married Margaret Pugsley who had come from Nova Scotia to visit her uncle Joe Marsh. Margaret was born 7 February 1888 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada. They lived on Edward's homestead for a short time, then moved to his father's farm.
After 27 years of farming, Edward became custodian of the Balfour School in 1936-1943, then moved to Minot to become custodian of Ellison Department Store and later the Northwest Clinic. Margaret often worked as an alterationist for several stores. She was an excellent seamstress and was very skillful in handcrafts.
Edward retired in 1970 and passed away March 1972. Margaret suffered a stroke in 1980 and after living 2 years with daughter, Lillian, is now [1985] living in the Seattle area where her other 3 daughters live.
The children of Edward and Margaret [residences and surnames as of 1985]: Lillian (1910) Mrs. Ernest Strube, of Balfour; Beatrice (1911) Mrs. Ingvold Abrahamson, of Renton, Washington; Violet (16 October 1912 - 21 May 2003) Mrs. George Billey, of Bothell, Washington; La Von (1918) Mrs. E. David Daniel Nehrenberg
Son of Gustav John and Marie Louise Bloedau Nehrenberg

The U. S. Army records for David are digested/annotated as follows: His Army Number was 47,901. He was born in Twin Brooks, Grant County, South Dakota [The FindAGrave Memorial has him born in Drake. When considering the above residences of the family, the Twin Brooks birth place appears to be more accurate] on 1 January 1897 of German parents. His occupation was a Barber. He was under age to register for draft but he enlisted into Company D, 1st Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, at Minot, Ward County, North Dakota on 10 July 1917. Lillian Pearl Nehrenberg
Daughter of Edward Emil and Marie Margaret Pugsley Nehrenberg

The below information is digested from an article in "MCHENRY COUNTY: Its History and Its People 1885-1985" [Author Unknown] and research by Mike Peterson.
Ernest Ervin Strube, the son of Louis and Emma Strube, was born in Alban Township, Grant County, South Dakota on Dec. 25, 1899. When Ernest was very young his parents emigrated to North Dakota to homestead a farm near Karlsruhe. His mother took care of the children and lived in a sod house to prove up the claim while Ernest's father worked away from home to support the family. Ernest remembers his mother making butter then catching a ride to town with the neighbors to sell the butter and buy groceries. Rain would raise havoc with the sod house -- muddy floors, wet beds, etc. In 1908 his parents purchased a farm 4 miles from Balfour -- the farm is presently owned by his brother, Ervin.
Ernest married Lillian Nehrenberg on 12 June 1935. Lillian was the daughter of Edward and Margaret Nehrenberg and was born on 5 February 1910 on a farm near Balfour.
The family farmed until 1944 when they moved to Balfour so that Ernest could take over the Balfour Standard Oil Bulk Station business. Because of back problems Ernest had to retire from the Bulk business and return to farming in 1952. He farmed until 1983 when he retired.
Lillian has taken advantage of several jobs during the years in Balfour. Because of her 7 years of teaching experience before her marriage she was privilaged to substitute teach in the Balfour School. She was also a cook at Pete's Cafe and served as a post office clerk until 1980.
The children of Ernest and Lillian [residences and surnames as of 1985]: Marlys (1936) Mrs. Daniel Orluck, Makoti; Avis Audrey (1937) deceased, Dennis Lee (1938) deceased; Darryl Ernest (1939) Minot married Barbara Trappett in 1964; Delton Dean (1944) Minot-married Janice Westergaard in 1968; and Cheryl Anne (1952) Mrs. Wade Iverson, Minot.
