John L. Seright
Youngest Son of John and Jennie Seright

From MCHENRY COUNTY: Its History and Its People, 1885-1985:
John L. and Renie (Proffitt) Seright
By Carol D. Brooks

John H. Seright and his young son, John L., left Hancock, Iowa on August 1, 1902 in a light covered democrat with a driving team and arrived in Riga Township by the first of September. Mr. Seright was a Civil War veteran and had filed on his claim in 1890 by acclaimation. They built a 12x14 shack, putting it three feet below ground for warmth, put up enough hay for their horses and one cow, and built a sod barn. They planned to stay the fourteen months required to prove up on the claim and then return to Iowa.
In December 1902 his wife, Jeannie, arrived and in the spring of 1903 their four daughters, Katie, Ruth, Mary and Nina came. When the year was nearly up, John L. said, "Papa, let's stay" and the Seright Ranch is still in operation.
John L. "Johnny" was also waiting for Renie Proffitt to grow up. She did and they were married on December 23, 1915. Three children blessed their marriage: Sue, John Wilson and Wilson Proffitt. The family was very active in church and community affairs and added to their land and buildings.
John L. died on December 3, 1966 at the age of 82. Renie continued to live alone in her home for many years. In the winter months she would visit her daughter and family in Denver. Renie passed away in Colorado on February 1, 1983 at the age of 88. Both funerals were held in the Hope Congregational Church with burial in the Granville cemetery.
