Drake was founded in 1899 in Sections 2, 3, 10 and 11 of Spring Grove Township [Township 151 Range 76] at the junction of the Devils Lake-Max and Valley City-Minot lines of the Soo Line Railroad. The post office was established 15 September 1902 with Henry R. W. Bentley (1854-1942) as Postmaster. The village incorporated in 1906, and became a city in 1916. The Zip Code is 58736, and it reached a peak population of 831 in 1950. In 2018 the population was 269. It was named for Herman Drake (1860-1947), the original homesteader of the townsite who was active in village and school affairs.
