UPHAM

A great portion of the Upham information is resourced in Golden Jubilee, 1905 - 1955, Upham, North Dakota, also North Dakota Place Names by Douglas Wick and Origins of North Dakota Place Names by Mary Ann Barnes Williams.

This Great Northern Railroad station was founded in June 1905 in the southwest quarter of Meadow Township (T159 R78) Section 22, and named for Dr. Warren Upham, longtime Superintendent of the Minnesota Historical Society. He was the author of the standard book on Minnesota place names, and it is likely that this is the only instance where a town was named after such a writer. The post office was established on 1 September 1905 with Nelson J. Kenyon as Postmaster. Raymond C. Long later held this post for 46 years in two tenures. The village incorporated in 1908, its elevation is 1460, the Zip Code is 58789, and a peak population of 403 was reached in 1950. In 2018 the population was 141. Andrew L. Freeman, a leader in rural electrification, was born here in 1909.
