COUNTY FORMATION

Created by the 1873 territorial legislature, the county was named in honor of a Metis voyageur, Joseph Mountraille. In 1891 the state legislature eliminated the county, adding its area into Ward County. Mountrail County was re-established 29 Jan 1909. Stanley is the County Seat.
