JOHN REDBEAN

Some Indian Census Records indicate he was also known as John Swiftbird.
He was a Code Talker in World War I. From the Roster of the Men and Women Who Served in the Army or Naval Service: "REDBEAN, JOHN. Army number 2,559,186; registrant, Sioux county; born, Fort Yates, N. Dak., Sept. 20, 1890, of American parents; occupation, laborer; inducted at Fort Yates on March 29, 1918; sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa; served in 163rd Depot Brigade, to April 20, 1918; Company G, 329th Infantry, to discharge; overseas from May 3, 1918, to Jan. 31, 1919. Discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, on Feb. 12, 1919, as a Private, Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability, 5%."
John died in Sioux County on 25 April 1955. Burial


PAUL RED DOG

A Private First Class veteran of World War II. He served from 2 December 1942 until 16 December 1945.
Paul was born in Cannon Ball on 6 August 1912 to James, (abt 1869) and Mary (abt 1870). He had one brother Peter, born aboout 1908. In one census it indicated he had a grandmother living with him; Margaret Standing Elk born about 1846.
Paul married Agnes. Her surname is unknown. They had a daughter Iva M. born 5 July 1913. The family had land located in Township 130, Range 84, Section 2.
He died on 7 June 1996 at Fort Yates and is buried at Red Cedar Cemetery. Burial.


GEORGE JAMES RED FOX

George was born in Selfridge on 24 March 1888 to Joseph (1858) and Cecelia (1857) Red Fox. His known siblings were William (1879), Enna (1882), Joseph (1886), Cecille (1891), Paul (1893), and Anna (1900). He was a Code Talker in World War I. From the Roster of the Men and Women Who Served in the Army or Naval Service: "RED FOX, GEORGE JAMES. Army number 503,331; registrant, Sioux county; born, Selfridge, D. T., March 24, 1888, of American parents; occupation, rancher; inducted at Fort Yates on March 13, 1918; sent to Fort Logan, Colo.; served in 21st Company, Coast Artillery Corps, Fort Strong, Mass., to May 12, 1918; Battery B, 71st Artillery, Coast Artillery Corps, to discharge; overseas from July 31, 1918, to Feb. 22, 1919. Discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, on March 7, 1919, as a Private."
Widower George was married to widowed Mary Nations Shield Eagle on 1 December 1937 in South Dakota. No earlier record of a marriage or children could be found. Also, no death date or burial place could be found.


BENEDICT RED LEGS

Benedict was born on 30 October 1896 in Bullhead, Corson County, South Dakota. For many years he resided in Sioux County and the census reports did not reveal parents but his grandmother was Louisa Runninghawk. He married Ida Looking Horse. Their children included: Gabriel (11 November 1919, Henry (1921) who married Magdaline Red Door, Madine (16 January 1925), Sherman (7 August 1928), and Bernice (18 May 1931).
Benedict registered for the World War I draft at Bullhead on 9 June 1918 as a resident of Standing Rock Indian Reservation. No record of his service could be found except that in 2008 the government recognized the service of the World War Code Talkers of which Benedict was one of them.
Benedict is buried at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church Cemetery in Little Eagle, Corson County, South Dakota. Burial


ASA RED STONE

Asa was born 28 November 1894 in Cannonball to Clara Left Hand (Catkawin) Red Stone (1860). Siblings included David (1876-1927), Wablezela Looks After (1879), Owanka Couch (1881), and Elizabeth/Lizzie (1882).
He was a Code Talker in World War I. From the Roster of the Men and Women Who Served in the Army or Naval Service: "REDSTONE, ASA. Army number 2,787,779; registrant, Sioux county: born, Cannon Ball, N. Dak., Nov. 28, 1894, of American parents; occupation, farmer; inducted at Fort Yates on May 25, 1918; sent to Camp Lewis, Wash.; served in 166th Depot Brigade, to June 20, 1918; Company C, 348th Machine Gun Battalion, to discharge; overseas from July 6, 1918, to Apr 2, 1919. Engagements: Offensives: Meuse—Argonne; Ypres—Lys. Defensive Sector: Aubreville (Lorraine). Discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa on April 22, 1919, as a Private."
On 3 April 1921, Asa married Susan One Horn (1893). Their children included: Virginia (1922), Josephine (1924), Melvin (1927-1961), Cecelia (1930), Courtney (1932-1956), Clara (1935-1941), and Isabel Marie (1937).
Asa died on 25 November 1949 in Sioux County. A burial for him has not been located.


LEONARD RED TOMAHAWK

Leonard was born on 25 May 1924 in Cannon Ball to Barnabas (Barney) and Louisa (Mentz) Red Tomahawk. His siblings included; Mary, Joseph, Peter, Courtney, Bernard, Caroline, Vivian, Francis (male), Mayme, LaVerne, Florence (married a Grey Eagle).
Leonard enlisted in the U. S. Army on 17 May 1943. As a Private First Class he was assigned to Company E of the 21st Infantry Regiment. On 15 November 1944, Leonard was killed in action by the enemy, during the Battle of Leyte, at Leyte, Visayas Group, Philippines.

PETER A. RESSLER

Peter was born on 9 November 1921 to Frank and Regina Schwartz Ressler. Their other children included: Adam (1914) and his twin Eva, Rose, Ann, Malena, Mathilda, and Eleanor
Peter enlisted into the U. S. Army on 6 September 1942 and served as a Private at Headquarters, 424th Infantry, 106th Division. Peter died in Germany on 12 May 1945. One reported indicated that Peter died a non-combat death and another indicates he was killed in action.
