A law requiring registration of births and deaths was enacted in 1893 but repealed in 1895, then reenacted in 1899. However, the law was not well-complied with in the early years and registration was not considered complete until 1923.

Museum exhibits include a horse-drawn hearse, antique automobiles, workings of an old store, delicate Bavarian crystal, dolls and a restored

Soo Line Railroad depot that is fully equipped with period furnishings. Open Sunday afternoons, Memorial Day-Labor Day.

Located about 40 miles southwest of Lakota - Fort Totten was an Army outpost from 1867 until 1890 and today is one of the nation’s best preserved forts of the Indian War era.
