Ole A. Johnson and Peter Rudrud purchased a tract of land from Thomas Goovden in January 1890 and established this cemetery consisting of 1.05 acres directly east of what is now St. Rose of Lima's Catholic Cemetery. Burial of Hillsboro's early settlers took place here, many before any other cemetery was established. It is interesting to note that almost every monument in the Elmwood Cemetery was inscribed in the Norwegian language.
