This Great Northern Railroad station was founded in 1881 in the southwest quarter of section 21 and southeast quarter of section 20-144-53, Norman Township. The town was platted in 1882 by Isaac Wood [Note: Isaac Wood primarily lived in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area but owned land in Traill County], who named it for Josiah Hallis Gale, an early homesteader just south of the site. It was incorporated in 1885. The post office was established August 3, 1882 in the store of Postmaster Joseph S. Kemp [Note: There is a lengthy biography of the Kemp family starting on Page 24 of Galesburg Centennial Book. The elevation is 1066, the Zip Code is 58035, and a peak population of 328 was reached in 1930. The population was 106 in 2016. Ole Soholt was Mayor 1947-1968.
