August Rebsch

August Rebsch on of the pioneers of Grand Forks County who had lived in Union township for about 40 years, passed to his eternal reward on Friday morning, March 23, 1923 at the home of his son, Chas. Rebsch, after a lingering illness of over a year with dropsy and heart trouble. He attained the age of 80 years, 4 months and 5 days.
The departed was born at Kratznick, near Arnswalde, Germany on the Nov. 18th, 1842. He was united in marriage with Albertine Nienas on Nov. 18th, 1872. This union was blessed with one son and five daughters, of which died in infancy. In 1882 they immigrated to this county and settled down near Ripon, Wis. Here they were converted to God during the ministry of Rev. C. Wisgard and united with the Evangelical church. In 1883 they to Holmes, N.D., where they took up land and established a home. Here they also found their church with Rev. F.W. Tesch as pastor. They became very active members of the Evangelical Church at Holmes. On August 1, 1898 his wife preceded him to the heavenly Father.
During his suffering he was very patient and bore his affliction with Christian fortitude. He is now with the Lord and his works do follow him. He leaves to mourn his Chas. Rebsch of Union township; Mrs. Frank Schroeder of Union township; Mrs. Abraham Eckel and Mrs. F. Marshall of Valley City; and Mrs. Wallace Woodruff of Greenville, Ind; 30 grandchildren and many others and friends.
Funeral services were held at the home on Monday, March 26 at 12:30 p.m. and at the Evangelical church at 1:30 p.m. Rev. R. E. Strutz of Jamestown read the Scripture and offered prayer. Rev. G. F Hack of Holmes read the obituary and preached in German, and Rev. W. C. Menges of Grand Forks preached in English. Interment was made in the family lot at the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Marshall, 71, VC Pioneer, dies

Mrs. Bertha (Fred H.) Marshall, 71, a resident of Valley City for over 50 years died Friday evening at Mercy Hospital.
She is survived by a daughter, Irma, a teacher at Livingston, Mont.; an adopted son, Carl R. Marshall of Kansas City, Mo.; and three sisters Mrs. Frank Schroeder of Reynolds, N.D., Mrs. Abe Eckel of Valley City and Mrs. Wallace Woodruff of Lexington, Ky.
Funeral services are pending word from relatives. Friends my call at the Holberg-Peterson Funeral Home.
Rites for Mrs. Marshall Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Marshall, 71, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Holberg-Peterson Funeral Home and at 2:30 at the Salem Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Barnard officiating.

Holmes Pioneer Died Saturday

Charles Rebsch, 77, prominent farmer of Union Township and early settler of that community died of a heart attack at his farm home last Saturday noon.
Mr. Rebsch was born in Arnswalda Germany on August 24, 1873. He came to America with his parents in 1882 and his father homesteaded on a farm in Union township, which remained his home until his death.
On March 4, 1897 he was married to Amelia Woitte at Rochester, Minnesota, and in 1947 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Survivors include his wife and five children. They are Mrs. Lester Farringer of Olympia, Wash; Mrs. Bert Scheel, Elmer and Reuben of Thompson, and Mrs. Ole Lee of Reynolds and ten grandchildren. He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Frank Schroeder of Reynolds, Mrs. Minnie Eckel and Mrs. Bertha Marshall of Valley City, and Mrs. W. G. Woodruff of Lexington, Ky. Two children preceded him in death in infancy.
He was an active member of the Holmes Evangelical United Brethren Church of Holmes.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the home at 1 o'clock and in the Holmes Evangelical United Brethren Church at 2 o'clock. Rev. Clarence Schaeffer officiated. Active pallbearers were Henry and Louis Beine, Arthur Fischer, Fred Schroeder, Arnold Nienas and William Strutz. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. A.A. Kjelland, August and Charles Griese, Carl Lee, Ed Bahr, Ernest Eichorst and George Baetz.

ELSIE REBSCH

Elsie Scheel

Mrs. Bert (Elsie) Scheel was born November 2, 1898, in Union Township, near Reynolds. Her parents were the late Charles and Amelia Woitte Rebsch. She was baptized at the Holmes United Brethren Church and attended school in Union Township.
On October 3, 1929, she married Mr. Scheel at the Rebsch farm home. They farmed in the Thompson-Reynolds community and lived in Reynolds for a number of years following their retirement from active farming. Mr. Scheel passed away in May of 1972 and Mrs. Scheel had made her home in Northwood since his death.
She was a loyal member of the Holmes United Methodist Church and its Women's Organization.
Mrs. Scheel passed away at the Northwood Hospital on July 27.
Surviving are her brother, Elmer Rebsch of Thompson and two sisters Mrs. Ole (Myrtle) Lee of Reynolds and Mrs. Lester (Helen) Farringer of Olympia, WA. Several nieces and nephews and one great great grand nephew also survive.
Funeral services were held July 31 at the Holmes United Methodist Church, near Reynolds, with Rev. Darrell Aleson officiating. Mrs. Elmer Ollman was organist with Mrs. Daniel Lee as soloist. Casketbearers were Henry Beine, Jr., Olger Thompson, Berto Hovet, Howard Fischer, Norman Roeder and James Beine. Interment was in the church cemetery.

MARTHA REBSCH

Mrs. F. Schroeder

Mrs. Frank Schroeder, pioneer resident of the Holmes community, passed away Wednesday of last week at the Northwood Old Peoples Home following an illness of the past five months.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, April 30 at the Holmes EUB Church with Rev. Sterling Wenzel officiating. Burial was in the churchyard cemetery. Pallbearers were Ralph Schroeder, Fred Schroeder, Rueben Rebsch, Bert Scheel, Louis Beine, and Erwin Nienas. Music was furnished by the Holmes Male Quartet and Mrs. Elmer Ollman was organist.
Mrs. Schroeder, the former Martha Rebsch, was born in Williamsburg, Germany, February 21, 1875 and came to America and Ripon, Wisconsin in 1881. She came to the Holmes community a year later. She was married October 8, 1892 to Frank Schroeder and the couple farmed in Union Township for many years. Mr. Schroeder passed away January 8, 1960.
Surviving are six daughters Lillian Schroeder, St Paul; Esther Schroeder, Brainerd, MN; Edith Schroeder, Chicago; Mrs. Henry Dute, Naperville, ILL; Mrs. Arthur Nagel, Detroit, Mich; and Mrs. Henry Beine, Reynolds; and one sister. Three sons and a daughter preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Holmes.

Mrs. Abe Eckel dies on Monday

Mrs. Abe (Minnie) Eckel, 74, pioneer resident of Valley City passed away on Monday afternoon after a long illness.
She is survived by two sons James M. Eckel of Valley City, Wallace C. Eckel of Blue Island, Ill; two daughters Esther at home, Myrtle, Mrs. Nels Nelson of Litchville; two sisters Mrs. Frank Schroeder, Reynolds, ND, Mrs. W. G. Woodruff of Lexington, Ky; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and two children.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, October 15, at 2 o'clock in the Epworth Methodist Church with Rev. Henry Gernhardt and Rev. Thomas Barnard officiating. Interment will be in the family lot at Woodbine Cemetery. Mrs. Eckel will lie in state at Oliver's Chapel from this evening until 10 o'clock. The casket will not be opened in the church.

Myrtle B. Lee

The funeral for Myrtle B. Lee, 81, Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Reynolds, will be at 10 Tuesday in the Stjordahlen Lutheran Church near Reynolds. She died Saturday.
She attended school near Thompson. She married Ole Lee October 23, 1937, at Reynolds.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter; one sister, 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. (Amundson)

Reuben Rebsch

Reuben Rebsch was born March 10, 1903 near Thompson. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rebsch. He was educated in Union Township, Grand Forks County. May 10, 1927 he was united in marriage to Irma Schroeder of Thompson. They farmed in Union Township and he entered into rest at his farm home on September 7. He was a faithful member of the Holmes Evangelical United Brethren Church near Reynolds. He was also a member of the Church Brotherhood. He leaves his wife and one son, Glen of Bush Prairie, Minn, two daughters Mrs. Ernest (Janet) Hanson of Fargo and Mrs. Kenneth Lykken (Gloria) of Hatton; a brother Elmer of Thompson and three sisters Mrs. Bert Scheel and Mrs. Ole Lee of Reyolds and Mrs. Lester Farringer of Olympia, Wash.
Allen Solheim officiated at the funeral service, which was held September11 at the Holmes United Methodist Church. Mrs. Elmer Ollman was organist. Mrs. Allen Solheim was soloist with Mrs. Elroy Lange as her accompanist.
Honorary pallbearers were Martin Sorlien, Warren Nienas, Ralph Schroeder, Elroy Lange, Herbert Strutz, Henry Beine, Ray Hart and Archie Baetz. Active pallbearers were Allen Rebsch, Daniel Lee, Harold Lee, Myron Bahr, Kermith Schroeder and LeRoy Schroeder. Interment was in the church cemetery.

ALVIN FRANK ROEDER

Alvin Roeder

Alvin Frank Roeder was born July 30, 1892 in Union Township, near Thompson, ND. His parents were the late Herman and Augusta Schroeder Roeder. He attended school near his parental home. On February 23, 1922 he was married to Alvira Sprunk at Chaffee, ND. They farmed in Union Township. They observed their 51st wedding anniversary this year. They are members of the Holmes United Methodist Church, near Reynolds.
He entered into rest at the Northwood Hospital on July 5.
Surviving him are his wife and three sons, two brothers Paul of Thompson and Herbert of Hatton; and a sister Mrs. Frank (Emma) Strutz, of Grand Forks. His brother Milton and sisters Mrs. Ezra (Mina) Bechtel and Mrs. Art Fischer have preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held July 9 at the Holmes United Methodist Church, near Reynolds, with Rev. Francis Kinzler officiating. The Holmes Male Quartet sang with Mrs. Elmer Ollman as organist. Honorary pallbearers were Ralph Schroeder, Henry Beine, Sr., Erwin Nienas, Ezra Griese, Elmer Ollman and Ernest Knutson. Casketbearers were Larry Hjelmstad, Delmar Roeder, Warren Nienas, Vern Sprunk, Verrill Sprunk and Howard Fischer. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Frank Strutz

Funeral services for Mrs. Frank (Emma) Strutz were held Monday, August 1 at the Valley Memorial Home and Holmes United Methodist Church with Pastors Lloyd Nelson and Ralph Cushing officiating. Organist was Mrs. Elroy Lange and soloist was Mrs. Donald Anderson.
Mrs. Strutz was the first white child born in Union Township August 27, 1882, the daughter of the late Herman Roeder and Augusta Schroeder. She attended rural school in Union Township and there she grew to womanhood. She married Frank Strutz December 4, 1907. The couple made their home on the farm and farmed until his death in 1947. She moved to Grand Forks in 1964 and for the next 131/2 years made her home at the Valley Memorial Home.
She entered into rest at Valley Memorial July 28, 1977. She was a member of the Holmes United Methodist Church, rural Reynolds.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Milton and Alvin Roeder; two sisters Mrs. Ezra (Mina) Bectel, Mrs. Art (Edna) Fischer, and Albert, Ernest and Amanda in infancy.
Casketbearers were Earl Roeder, Howard Fischer, Norman Roeder, Delmer Roeder, Kenneth Bohlmann, and Herbert Strutz. Interment was in the Church Cemetery.

HERBERT ALVIN ROEDER

Herbert Alvin Roeder

Herbert Alvin Roeder was born February 16, 1891, in Union Township east of Hatton, son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Herman and Augusta (Schroeder) Roeder. He attended rural school in Union Township and grew to manhood in the Hatton-Thompson area.
He married Caroline Fischer of Thompson October 31, 1917. After their marriage they farmed in Union Township until their retirement in 1967. Mrs. Roeder died February 17, 1968. He was a resident of Tri-County Retirement and Nursing Home, having entered there in 1967. He died there May 10.
He was a member of Holmes United Methodist Church east of Hatton and had served on the school board in Union Township for about 20 years. He is also well remembered for his beautiful oil paintings, which he did for a hobby with many given as gifts or remembrances to neighbors and friends and relatives; however, as his paintings became more well known he sold several to art enthusiasts.
Surviving are a son and three daughters, 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; a brother Paul, Thompson, and sister Mrs. Frank (Emma) Strutz, Grand Forks. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alvin, Ernest, Albert, Milton; and three sisters Mrs. Art (Edna) Fischer, Mrs. Ezra (Mina) Bechtel and Amanda.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 13, at Holmes United Methodist Church with Pastor Darrell Aleson officiating. Organist was Greg Schroeder. Wayne and Donna Roeder sang a vocal duet for special music. They sang “In the Sweet Bye and Bye'' and “Just a Closer Walk'' Honorary pallbearers were all neighbors and friends. Casketbearers were grandsons Marlon Lange, Kevin Lange, Donovan Lange, Darrell Hart, Wayne Roeder and Robert Roeder. Interment was in the Church Cemetery.

HERMAN J. ROEDER

Herman Roeder

Herman J. Roeder 85, 618 Walnut Street died Thursday at his home. He had been a resident here since 1917.
Mr. Roeder was born December 9, 1854 at Gutsdorf Pommern, Germany and came to the United States with his parents when three years old. He lived in Green Lake County, Wisc. Until 1882 at which time he homesteaded at Holmes, ND, where he lived until coming to Grand Forks. While at Holmes Mr. Roeder was a member of the school board and the township board. For many years he was director of the Farmers elevator at Thompson.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Paul, Herbert, Alvin and Milton all of the Holmes community; three daughters Mrs. E. Betchel, Fargo, Mrs. F. Strutz and Mrs. A. Fischer of Holmes; one brother August, Thompson; 26 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Rites for Herman J. Roeder will be today at 1 P.M. in the Hanson-Anderson chapel and 2:30 P.M. at the Evangelical church at Holmes. Rev. Ira Herzberg will officiate and burial will be in the churchyard cemetery. Pallbearers will be his four sons, Paul, Herbert, Alvin and Milton; and two son-in-laws Frank Strutz and A. Fischer, all of Holmes.
Here to attend the funerals are Mr. O.O. Haugen and daughter Imogene of Minot. They will visit with Mrs. Roeder for several days.

Milton A. Roeder

Funeral services for Milton A. Roeder, lifelong resident of the Thompson community, were held Monday afternoon June 27 in the Holmes EUB Church. Mr. Roeder died Thursday at his farm home following a long illness. Rev. Allen Solheim and Rev. Walter Schott officiated at the service and interment was made in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Lars Trydahl, Marvin Rydland, Carl Seig, Berthold Scheel, Ernest Knutson and Murray Cox. Active pallbearers were Howard Fischer, Larry Hjelmstad, Delmer Roeder, Kenneth Roeder, Earl Roeder, and Norman Roeder. Mrs. Elmer Ollman was organist and Rev. and Mrs. Walter Schott sang.
Mr. Roeder was born November 27, 1893 in Union Township, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Roeder. He attended rural school in this community and was married to Martine Hjelmstad in 1928. They farmed in Union Township near Thompson. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion Post of Thompson.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters; three brothers Paul, Herbert, and Alvin, Thompson; two sisters Mrs. Arthur (Edna) Fischer, Thompson, and Mrs. Frank (Emma) Strutz, Grand Forks; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

PAUL E. ROEDER

Paul Roeder

The funeral service for Paul E. Roeder, 97, Holmes was held on Tuesday, August 20 at the Holmes United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Ellingson officiating. Organist was Mrs. John Hintermeister and soloists were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Klamm. Honorary pallbearers were all neighbors and friends. Casketbearers were Howard Fischer, Delmer Roeder, Warren Nienas, Norman Roeder, Dwight Ollman and Ted Camerud. Burial was in the Holmes United Methodist Church.
Mr. Roeder was born December 4, 1887 near Holmes, where he grew up and attended school. He later attended agriculture school, now known as North Dakota State University in Fargo. He married Helen Nienas December 10, 1913 near Holmes. They farmed near Holmes until her death in 1967.
He became resident of the Tri County Nursing Home at Hatton in 1980. He entered into rest on Saturday, August 17, 1985.

MRS. OLE RYDLAND

Mrs. Ole Rydland

Funeral services for Mrs. Ole Rydland will be held Saturday, May 22 at 1:30 o'clock at the home and 2 p.m. at Washington Prairie Lutheran church. Rev. A.E. Setness will officiate and burial will be made in the churchyard cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Otis Stendahl, Carsten Brandon, Albert Smestad, Lloyd Hanson, Truman Landa, and Gilbert Sorlien. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Knutson, John Kringlen, Helmer Hanson, Glenn Olson, Alfred Solberg, Hildor Kamphaug, Clarence Monson and Halfdan Hammerstad.
Mrs. Rydland passed away on Wednesday morning at the Old People's Home in Northwood where she had been living for some time.
She was born August 1873 at Bergen, Norway. Coming to the United States in 1891, she arrived in Hatton on May 19 the same year. On June 3, 1893 she was married to Ole C. Rydland. They made their home on a farm in Washington township. She was a pioneer member of the Washington Prairie congregation and also of the Ladies Aid.
Mr. Rydland passed away two years ago this month. They had observed their golden wedding anniversary in June 1943. Mrs. Rydland is survived by six children, Clarence and M. G. Rydland of Hatton, Mrs. Charles Schumacher of Grand Forks, Mrs. Alphield Ness of Hatton, Gudrid Rydland of Minneapolis, and Mrs. D.E. Lommen of Bismarck. There are also eight grandchildren. One child died in infancy.
