606 Canyon Street - Built pre 1888
JAMES P. McOMIE / WILLIAM N. McGILL HOUSE
James P. McOmie, a Taylor miner, moved his house in Taylor to Ely in 1888. McOmie was an Ely Postmaster from 1897 to 1901.
In 1902, William N. McGill (1852-1923) purchased the residence as his city home. Around 1906, McGill sold his ranch to mining interests, who built a huge smelter there. The present town of McGill, twelve miles north of Ely, is the site of his ranch and the smelter town was named in his honor. McGill served one term as a State Legislator in 1891.
This house was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, homes in Ely, Nevada.
