This information was compiled from the Federal and State Census records for Otsego 
County, New York, from 1790 to 1925. There are inevitable errors, some resulting from poor 
quality microfilm images of the census records, others from transcription errors of all 
sorts. Users finding errors of any sort are invited to communicate with Hugh MacDougall,

Note: Non-whites were classified in only two categories in the 1790, 1800, and 1810 
censuses: "other free persons except non-taxed Indians" and "slaves."  No age or sex 
statistics were provided. Names of non-white free persons are  therefore given only 
when the non-white was the head of household -- otherwise non-whites only appear as 
statistics listed in the households of whites. Names of the few non-white household 
heads are shown in bold type.

In 1790 the present area of Otsego County was included in the towns of Canajoharie 
(areas west of Otsego Lake) and Otsego (areas east of Otsego Lake) in the County of 
Montgomery (pre-Revolutionary Tryon County).  The two towns, in 1790, also included 
much other territory not now in Otsego County listings are therefore only "possibly" 
in Otsego. Moreover, in something like 1/6 of entries, the last column showing slaves 
(and in some cases the adjoining column for other free persons) has been worn away, 
so that undoubtedly many African American listings have been lost. We have sought to 
reconstruct these by comparing the page-by-page totals for "other free" and "slave" 
populations with the microfilmed pages themselves -- often dash marks in the surviving 
"Other Free Persons" indicate where there had been entries in the adjoining, "slave" 
column. In households where we suspect there may have been slaves these are indicated 
as "S?" (since no numbers appear) and must be considered as tentative identification 
of possible slave-owners.
