I am trying to learn more about my gggrandparents Orin
FOSTER and Emeline KNAPP.
My understanding is that Emeline was born in Otsego County, married Orin
(from Dutchess county), and they had 5 children between 1826 and 1835
including one in either Middlefield or Clarksville in 1832, and then
Emeline died somewhere around 1846. My father remembers visiting their
gravesite on a trip from Cobleskill to Cooperstown somewhere in the country
(about 30 years ago?). They were in Middlefield for the 1830 census, and
were apparently in Clinton county for the 1840 census.
I was wondering if you might have any information on Emeline and possibly
Orin, or perhaps be able to suggest some likely cemeteries based upon your
knowledge of the area. (My brother lives in Jersey, and I might be able to
convince him to look if I could narrow down the search.) My understanding
is that there are at least 5 of us FOSTER descendants searching this line,
but none have been able to get past Orin and Emeline except for learning
that Orin's mother was named Lizzie BOUGHTON, and that she married a SMITH
after the early death of Orin's father.

I have recently discovered I am the
gggrandaughter of Levi Spencer (b. 1820?) son of Rufus Spencer (1793-1878) and
Mary Card Spencer. These Spencers moved to the area in approx. 1810. i am
searching for death record or military records on levi Spencer. He served in
civil war, lived in alabama after war, possible deserter. he left the
tenn/ala family he had and went north in 1890 ..then at some point killed by
a train. I saw all the info on 121st regiment, did not see his name listed
anywhere. If you have heard anything about him or can point me in the right
direction, I would appreciat it. he seems to be the missing link!!!

I am searching for the descendants of the Joseph CRAFTS family. Joseph
was born Monson, Mass. May 1763. He married on 4 Sept 1793 Mary SYKES,
widow of Abner Sykes and daughter of James Averill of Coopertown, NY.
She died at Hartwick, Otsego Co. NY Apr 1839, aged 79.
They are to have had three children: Mary Walter CRAFTS, born Hartwick
Apr 1795, Alba Sykes CRAFTS, born Hartwick Mar 1797 and James Averill
CRAFTS, born Hartwick Sept 1801.
In the book in the NY Public Library, The Descendants of Griffin Craft,
it says Joseph was a farmer who setttled at Hartwick after the war,
where he always lived, and where his death occurred Oct 1844 aged 81.
However, another source from the NEGHS says that Joseph CRAFTS,
1763-1844, married a Mary Ann BUTLER, born 1790, and had a daughter
Eliza CRAFTS in 1815 in either Nova Scotia, Ontario or New Brunswick. I
am trying to rectify this problem. If anyone has any information, I
would greatly appreciate it.

I would like submit another JOHNSTON query. I have the front end and the
back end of two JOHNSTON family trees and I'm trying to link them. May I
say that people should be careful when writing JOHNSON and JOHNSTON. It
does make a difference to some of us, especially in the case of WILLIAM
JOHNSTON. The man I think was my ancestor was chaplain of Cherry Valley
during the Revolutionary War. I am interested in his eldest son, also
WILLIAM JOHNSTON, and his descendants. I can give a brief account as I
have it of this Scotch-Irish Presbyterian:
Rev. WILLIAM JOHNSTON was the son of WILLIAM and ELIZABETH HOEY JOHNSTON
and was born in 1713 in MullowMale , County Tyrone, Ireland. He was
educated at U of Edinburgh.
He married ANNE CUMMINGS, daughter of Dr. JOHN and ANNE WITTER CUMMINGS and
he died 5-10-1782 in Schenectady, NY.
Rev. JOHNSTON came to Worcester, Mass. in 1736. The Puritans did not like
Presbyterians and he removed to New Hampshire in 1742 and then to Sidney
Plains and Unadilla, NY in 1773. They fled to Cherry Valley area due to
the British - backed Indian uprising. Some of the family did go back to
Sidney Plains after the Revolution. His son William apparently stayed in
Otsego Co. and had two sons, WILLIAM and ISAIAH YOUNGLOVE JOHNSTON.
The younger children of the old preacher has been well documented and I am
only interested in his eldest son, William. If anyone has any
documentation, I appreciate any help. Thanks.
