Ashtabula Tax List
|
Extracted
and Transcribed by Carol Page
Tilson
According to an Ashtabula Chamber of
Commerce history, the first settler in what would become Ashtabula
County was one Thomas Hamilton, who in 1801 built a log cabin at the
mouth of the Ashtabula River. By 1804, as shown by this tax list, more
than 70 men -- many with families -- had moved into the area. Ashtabula
County became an official entity in 1808, created from its parent
counties of Geauga and Trumbull.
