W. S. Hutton, 50, Dies in Ashtabula

William Francis Hutton, 50, died at his home here at 7:45 p.m. Saturday following an illness of two years.

Mr. Hutton was born in Ashtabula Aug. 25, 1903 and was a life-long resident here. He was employed as a machinist at the New York Central Railroad roundhouse.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus and the Machinists Union. He had served as grand knight and district deputy for the K. of C. His mother, Anastasia, survives.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Church. Interment will be in the family lot at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The body has been removed from the Zaback Funeral Home to the Tom Manning residence, 527 National Place, where friends may call anytime. The Knights of Columbus and the Altar and Rosary Society will join in services at 8 tonight.

Mrs. Bright, 79, Ex-Resident, Dies

Mrs. Lillian D. Bright, 79, died in her home here at 5:15 a.m. today. She had been in failing health for the past two years.

Mrs. Bright was born in a log cabin in Sheffield Nov. 14, 1874, the daughter of Charles and Catherine Ray Davison. Before coming to Ashtabula seven years ago, she had lived in Conneaut, Kingsville and Chicago.

She was a member of the Prospect Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star Lodge of Conneaut. Several cousins survive. Her husband, Augustus J. Bright, died in 1948.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Zaback Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Allred, pastor of Harris Memorial Church, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Glenwood Cemetery, Conneaut. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Martha W. Davis, 85, Dies

Mrs. Martha W. Davis, 85, died at 6:20 p.m. Sunday at Brown Memorial Hospital. She suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Saturday.

Born in Cleveland Nov. 5, 1868, Mrs. Davis had been a resident of Conneaut 51 years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and served as deaconess for many years. She was also a member of Rose Chapter OES, American Legion auxiliary, WCTU and GIA to B of LE.

Mrs. Davis is survived by two sons, W. George Davis, Cleveland, and James L. Davis, 920 Lincoln Dr. with whom she had made her home the past five years; two sisters, Mrs. William Bealer and Miss Sarah Whittaker, both of Greenville PA; two brothers, John Whittaker, Albion and William Whittaker, Butler PA; grandson, William Lloyd Hudson, Cleveland and granddaughter Jean L. Davis, Conneaut.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Davis, who died Nov. 29, 1948, a son, Lloyd, who died Oct. 23, 1941 and a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Crombie, who died July 2, 1945.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Thompson Funeral Home. Rev. William Hayden, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. McDougall Dies at Age 91

Mrs. Alphalena M. Schmidt McDougall, 91, died at 10 p.m. Sunday at the home of her son, William H. McDougall, Main Rd, North Kingsville. Death was due to complications.

Mrs. McDougall was born Nov. 17, 1862 in Toronto, Canada. She was married to William Sparks McDougall and resided in Lewiston NY since 1921. Prior to that time she had made her home in Rochester NY and Toronto. In recent years she had spent the winters with her son in North Kingsville.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Alphalena S. MacBain, Washington D.C, son, William McDougall, North Kingsville, grandson, David T. MacBain of Niagara Falls, NY and brother, Arthur S. Schmidt, Vancouver, British Columbia.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Union Presbyterian Church in North Kingsville with Rev. H. L. Betel officiating.

The body will be taken to Toronto for graveside services at 2 p.m. Thursday, where burial will be in the Toronto Necropolis Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Marcy Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Ashtabula Baby suffocates in Crib

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today at the Potti Funeral Home for Robin Starkey, four-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Starkey, Ashtabula. The child suffocated in his crib Saturday morning after pulling covers over his face. Besides the parents, the infant is survived by a brother, Frank Jr. at home.

Olive Carr Dies; Retired Teacher

Miss Olive Merle Carr, 72, a veteran school teacher in Ashtabula County, died Wednesday at the home of her brother, Frank Car, in Pierpont.

Miss Carr spent her early life in Pierpont where she later became a school teacher. She taught for 30 years in Pierpont, Monroe and Geneva schools. The popular school teacher retired in 1937.

For the past several years Miss Carr made her home in Cleveland.

Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Mary Brown, Cleveland; three brothers, Frank and John Carr of Pierpont, and Roy Carr, Springboro PA; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Waters-Childs Funeral Home in Pierpont. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Pierpont. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday afternoon and evening.

Mrs. Linfoot Dies at Age 70

Mrs. Phoebe Linfoot, 70, of 100 Marshall St, died in Brown Memorial Hospital at 10:30 a.m. today. She had been ill for several weeks and entered the hospital Monday.

Mrs. Linfoot had been a resident of Conneaut for 35 years.

She was a member of church of the Nazarene, Ashtabula.

Mrs. Linfoot is survived by two daughters, Miss Rozelia Linfoot and Mrs. John Owens, both of Conneaut; two grandchildren, Darlene and Bonnie Owens, and an uncle, Boyd Catherman, Mifflinburg PA.

Her husband, Warren W. Linfoot, died Feb. 1, 1953.

Funeral services will be at the Thompson Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday. Rev. George Carrier, pastor of Church of the Nazarene will conduct the service, assisted by Rev. Ronald Tovey, pastor of Free Methodist Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Rev. Langell’s Wife Succumbs

Mrs. Effie A. Langell, 62, wife of Rev. Floyd W. Langell of the State Line Evangelical United Brethren Church, died in Brown Memorial Hospital at 10:40 p.m. Sunday of complications. She entered the hospital Dec. 28.

She was born in Wayne County April 10, 1891.

Rev. and Mrs. Langell came to their present church in 1935 and also served the Denmark and Bulah Evangelical United Brethren Churches. They formerly served the North Conneaut United Brethren Church for six years. Mrs. Langell was a member of the State Line Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Blake of Kingsville and Mrs. Esther Ruland of Conneaut; a son, Harry of Newcomerstown OH; two brothers, Howard and William Wertz, and a half sister, Mrs. Asa Zeigler, all of Wooster, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be from Thompson Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. Merle Hayes and Dr. B. S. Arnold, superintendents of the East-Ohio Conference of the United Brethren Church, as co-officials.

The body will be taken to Wooster for burial and graveside services at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wooster Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Pfc. Clark is Reported Killed in Korean Action

Pfc. Donald J. Clark reported missing in action July 27, 1950 in a Korean battle, has been listed by the Dept. of Defense as having been killed in action, it was learned today.

The youth, born here April 8, 1928, was the son of Mr. & Mrs. F. J. Clark, 909 Seymour Dr.

Pfc. Clark was graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1946, after which he attended Fenn College at Cleveland. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in November, 1949 and was last heard from by his parents in a letter dated July 18, 1950.

The government has informed Mr. & Mrs. Clark the body of their son will be shipped back to the United States.

Besides his parents, the young soldier is survived by two brothers, Gordon of Cuyahoga Falls, and Neil of Ashtabula, and a grandmother, Mrs. Ida M. Clark, Ashtabula.

Mrs. John Cox Dies at Age 49

Mrs. Sue Bertha Cox, 49, of 327 Mill St. died at 2 a.m. today in her home. She had been ill for the past year.

Mrs. Cox, who was born in Huntsville Ala., has been a resident of Conneaut for the past 12 years.

Mrs. Cox is survived by husband, John; five daughters, Omega Cox, and Mrs. Minnie Henderson, both of Erie PA; Mrs. Artie Fleming, Ashtabula; and Lola and Ruth at home; a son, John Jr., Conneaut; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Lane, Michigan city Ind.; and Mrs. Gertrude Burns of Huntsville Ala; three brothers, Rev. Newman Jordan, Atalla Ala; James Jordan, Huntsville Ala; and Landford Jordan, Atmore Ala, and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements, in charge of the Cunningham Funeral Home, will be announced.

Nikolai Peltonen Dies at Age 83

Nikolai Peltonen, 83, of 909 Harbor St, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Brown Memorial Hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage. He had been in poor health for the last four years.

Mr. Peltonen came to Conneaut almost 70 years ago from Finland. He retired in 1938 after being employed at the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Co and the Nickel Plate.

Mr. Peltonen is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Hilja Setala and Mrs. Martha Spackman, both of Conneaut; Mrs. Helen Eskell and Mrs. Julia Nurmi, both of New York city; a son, Niles Peltonen, Conneaut; two grandchildren, Mrs. William Wilson, Conneaut and Mrs. Jeffrey Barrett, San Bernardino, Calif., a step-son, George Tusa, Cleveland; a brother, Elias in Finland and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding Mr. Peltonen in death were two sons, Captain Andrew Peltonen, killed in action in 1945, and Arvo Peltonen in 1947, and a sister, Mrs. Helga Salomaki, July 30, 1954.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Marcy Funeral Home, Rev. S. Halkola, of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in East Lakeville Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday afternoon and evening.

Pedestrian, Trucker Die in Area Traffic; County Death Toll at 20

A pedestrian and a trucker were killed Thursday in Conneaut area traffic accidents. The pedestrian was killed on a county highway. It was Ashtabula County’s 20th traffic fatality of the year.

An elderly farmer, Anthony Gruzd, 64, of Rome, was struck by a car and killed while walking on Rt. 45 about 5:58 p.m. Thursday. Sheriff’s deputies said the driver of the car was Francis W. Wright, 21, of Orwell.

County Coroner, Dr. C. C. Roller said death was due to a fractured skull. Mr. Gruzd also suffered a crushed chest, a fractured right arm and a fracture of the left leg.
Blinded by the Lights

Deputies said young Wright was traveling south and that he told them he was blinded by oncoming lights. He said as the other car passed, he heard a thud and stopped to investigate. When he found the body lying on the road, he hailed a passing truck driver who notified the Clarence Paine Funeral Home in Orwell. Mr. Paine called the county coroner.

Sheriff Tom Fasula said here today no charges have been lodged against young Wright but the facts of the case will be presented to the Grand Jury in January to discover if any criminal negligence was involved on the part of the driver.

Mr. Gruzd was born in Poland on Nov. 1, 1890. He is survived by his wife, Ursula, and son, Anthony Jr. both at home; two daughters, Mrs. Sophia DeWald and Mrs. Julia Wisniewski, both of Cleveland, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Orwell. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery there. Calling hours at the Paine Funeral Home are 7 to 9 p.m. tonight.
Trucker Killed

The trucker killed was Lloyd Frye, 38, of RD 1, Conneaut Lake, who was hauling lumber to Cleveland. According to State Police at Warren, the truck went out of control and crashed into a guard rail at the junction of Rts. 7 and 5, one mile north of Kinsman, at 5:45 p.m.

Frye was pinned in the wrecked cab. He died later in a Warren hospital. Police believe mechanical trouble might have caused the accident.

Frank Mallory, Civic Leader, Dies at 61

Frank H. Mallory, 61, of 443 Main St, died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in Brown Memorial Hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage. Mr. Mallory, a long time civic leader in Conneaut, had been in poor health for the past five years.

Mr. Mallory had served as a precinct committeeman and later as city councilman. In 1937, Mr. Mallory was the Republican candidate for mayor.

Mr. Mallory lived in Conneaut most of his life. In 1916 he operated a grocery store on Harbor St. In 1932 he entered the insurance business. At the time of his illness he was operating an insurance agency in his home.

Mr. Mallory was an active member of the United Congregational Christian Church where he had been an usher for many years.
Fraternal Posts

His leadership in fraternal affairs reflected in his positions as past president of the Kiwanis Club, past noble grand of the IOOF, secretary of the Moose and membership in the Elks and Eagles.

Mr. Mallory is survived by his wife, Florence; two sons, William B. of Conneaut and Lt. Colonel Robert F. Mallory, serving with the U.S.A.F. in Portugal; two brothers, Francis F. of Conneaut, and Loren D. of Girard Pa; two sisters, Mrs. Nina Woodworth, Girard PA, and Mrs. H. J. Meeder, Lake City PA; father, Clayton C. of Girard PA; an aunt, Mrs. May Hamilton, of E. Lakeville, and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Mallory was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie, in 1949.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Congregational Christian Church. Rev. Richard Kline will conduct the service. Burial will be in East Lakeville Cemetery. Friends may call at the Marcy Funeral Home any time today and between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Roland Dilgren, Lakeman, Dies at 38

Roland Dilgren, 38, nephew of Mrs. Jacob Kangas, 859 Sandusky St, died at noon Monday in the home of a friend in Fairport. Mr. Dilgren, a Great Lakes’ seaman, died of a heart attack. He was a frequent Conneaut visitor.

Mr. Dilgren made his home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dilgren, 501 New St., Fairport. Other survivors include two brothers, Paul, a Lieutenant in the Naval Air Force, and Elmer of Mentor. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Johan Kauppi, 74, Ex-Resident, Dies

Johan Kauppi, 74, former Conneaut resident, died Saturday in Lake County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Kauppi came to Fairport from Conneaut in 1938. He was a retired employee of the Diamond Alkalai Co.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Maria Talso, Conneaut; and three brothers in Finland.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Potti Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening.

Officiating at the rites will be Rev. Johan A. Maki, pastor of the First Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Painesville.

George Emery, 73, Ex-Lake Chief, Dies

Friends in Conneaut have received word of the death of George Emery, 73 of Charlevoix, Mich. Mr. Emery and his family lived in Conneaut for many years, making their home at 537 Main St.

Mr. Emery was born May 7, 1880 and died on Oct. 2. He entered the service of the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. in 1905 as second assistant of the Steamer McDougall. In 1909 he became chief engineer of the Steamer Mataafa and at the time of his retirement in 1944, was chief engineer on the Steamer Thomas.

Since 1944 he and his wife have made their home at 104 Auld Ave Charlevoix Mich. He is survived by his wife and one daughter.

County Man, 90, Chokes to Death

Frederick A. Quayle, 90, died in his home at Footville, OH, at 1 p.m. Sunday, choking to death on a piece of meat while eating dinner. County coroner Dr. C. C. Roller ruled the death accidental.

Mr. Quayle was born in Trumbull OH, on Nov 17, 1862. He is survived by a son, Ivan, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the family residence at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. George Barber of the Rock Creek Congregational Church officiating. Interment will be in Trumbull Center Cemetery. No calling hours will be observed. Paine Funeral Home, Rock Creek, is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Marshall Weck, 51, Dies

Mrs. Lillian Weck, 51, of Euclid, died at 9 p.m. Sunday at Woman’s Hospital, Cleveland, following a short illness.

Mrs. Weck was born Oct. 2, 1902 in Conneaut. She had lived in Euclid for the past 28 years, attending the Christian Church and was a member of the Protected Home Circle.

Survivors include her husband, Marshall; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Babcock, Ashtabula; Mrs. Harry Cline, 130 Hayward Ave and Mrs. Robert Koons, Walker Dr; three brothers, Raymond, Gordon and Frederick Bisbee, all of Cleveland, and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Marcy Funeral Home with Rev. Miles Strine of the Evangelical United Brethren Church officiating. Burial will be in East Lakeville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Mrs. Mina Thayer Dies at Age 88

Mrs. Mina Thayer, 88, died at 5:20 a.m. today at the home of her son, E. B. Thayer, 435 Buffalo St. She had been ill for the past three weeks. Death was attributed to a heart condition.

Mrs. Thayer was born in Conneaut Oct. 7, 1864, the daughter of Sheldon and Martha Van Gorder. She was married to Elmer Thayer Nov 20, 1881 and had spent her entire life in Conneaut. She was a member of the United Congregational Christian Church.

She is survived by three sons, E. B. Thayer, E. V. Thayer and Ray Thayer, all of Conneaut, 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Mahala Childs, Cleveland.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Mrs. Mina Eaton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Marcy Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Kline, pastor of the United Congregational Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in East Lakeville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home any time after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Rites Set Tuesday for Kustaa Wiitanen

Funeral services for Kustaa A. Wiitanen, 75, who died Saturday at his home 344 Smith St, East Lakeville, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Marcy Funeral Home. Rev. Sakari Halkola, pastor of the Finnish Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in East Lakeville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home any time after 4 p.m. today.

Mr. Wiitanen was born Oct. 5, 1877, in Ikkaiinen, Luhalahti, Finland. He came to Conneaut 49 years ago and has resided in Conneaut the past 38 years.

Since coming to Conneaut he has been a member of the Finnish Lutheran Church and was one of the founding members of the Men’s Brotherhood of the church. He was a retired employee of the New York Central Railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Hilja, East Lakeville; son, Oiva Wiitanen, and grandson, Erik Jon Wiitanen, Cleveland, and a brother and sister in Finland.
