Ashtabula- Fire, which gutted the Eagles Lodge on Center St Saturday,
caused the death of a 64- year- old caretaker of the building.
Merritt Morehouse, who lived on the premises, was overcome by smoke and
fire only six feet from the front door. Members of the club said they
believed Mr. Morehouse stumbled over a chair in his haste to reach the
exit. Dr. C. C. Roller, county coroner, ruled that death was due to
excessive smoke and fire.
Capt. J. M. Doran of the Park Ave Fire Station said the fire was "going
strong" when trucks from both uptown stations and from the Harbor
reached the scene. The inside of the building was charred and
smoke-blackened.
Lodge members and firemen said the blaze apparently started under the
bar on the ground floor and spread up the wall, breaking through the
floor of the meeting room directly above. Extensive damage was done to
the upstairs room.
Mr. Morehouse, a widower, had rooms at the back of the building and was
employed to stay on the premises at all times. Capt. Doran said he
believed the man was awakened by the smoke and may have tried to save
some papers or other valued articles and was overcome before he had an
opportunity to get them. (says "continued on pg two" but I only had
access to pg one).
