Mrs. Crosby Dies at Age 80
Mrs. Clara Wade Crosby, wife of D. C. C. Crosby, former county health
commissioner, died Saturday at 3:40 p.m. following a long illness. She
was 80 and lived on Lake Rd West.
Mrs. Crosby was a member of the Woman’s Club, Fortnightly club, Mary
Stanley Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and of the
Colonial Dames. She was a former president of the Women’s Republican
Club of Ashtabula County and was active for many years at St. Peter’s
Episcopal Church.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Crosby is survived by four sons, James Wade
Jenkins of Washington D. C., Col. John M. Jenkins Jr, (ret.) of Los
Angeles, Robert L. Jenkins of Evanston IL and Ben Wade Jenkins of
Cleveland, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Cremation
at Cleveland will be followed by burial services at Oakdale Cemetery,
Jefferson, at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Falling Tree Kills Farmer
Geneva – Roscoe Burkholder, 37, Madison, died in Geneva Memorial
Hospital at 4 a.m. today of a skull fracture sustained Friday on the
farm of his mother, Mrs. Minnie Burkholder. Mr. Burkholder, according
to reports, was assisting in felling a tree on his mother’s farm on
South River Rd West at 10:30 a.m. Friday when the tree, in falling,
struck and pinned him to the ground. He had been in critical condition
at the hospital.
Born Aug. 8, 1916, Mr. Burkholder, an excavating contractor, had lived
in this vicinity all his life. He had operated his own excavating
business for 10 years.
Surviving are his mother; two daughters, Linda Lou and Sandra Kay, both
of Saybrook, and three sisters, Mrs. Eloise Gabriel, Mrs. Gladys Carver
and Mrs. Edith Crane, all of Cleveland. Rites will be held Wednesday at
2 p.m. in Landon Funeral Home here. Rev. Gerald Forbes of Unionville
will officiate. Burial will be in Unionville. Friends may call Tuesday
afternoon and night at the funeral home.

Rep. Shaylor’s Wife Succumbs
Mrs. Mary B. Shaylor, wife of State Rep. Howard V. Shaylor, died at
6:30 a.m. today in General Hospital following a two-year illness. Born
at Ashtabula, Mrs. Shaylor was 64.
She resided on Lake Rd East, Ashtabula, and was a member of the First Methodist Church.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Shaylor is survived by a daughter, Mrs.
Marion Noss of Cleveland; a son, William Shaylor of Mayfield Heights,
and four sisters, Mrs. Clara Wilson of Honolulu, Miss Jessie Beidler,
Ashtabula, and Mrs. Gordon Mitchell and Mrs. Fred Demerline, both of
Indianapolis IN. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m.
in the Ducro Chapel. Rev. Charles W. Stoneburner, pastor of the First
Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
No calling hours will be observed.

Saybrook Man, 97, Burns to Death
Saybrook – Alden R. Beckwith, 97, was fatally burned at his home on Rt
45 here at 1:15 p.m. Saturday when his clothing caught fire when he was
warming himself beside a stove. He died enroute to Ashtabula General
Hospital. Witnesses reported that Mr. Beckwith’s garments burst into
flames after he left the stove and went outside his house. Dr. C. C.
Roller, county coroner, said death was accidental and due to burning.
Funeral services will be held in the Ducro Chapel at 1 p.m. Tuesday
with Rev. Robert George, Rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church,
officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Edgewood Cemetery. No
calling hours are being observed.
Mr. Beckwith is survived by two daughters, Dr. Mary E. Beckwith of
Chickashaw Okla. and Mrs. J. J. Flint of Jefferson; three sons, William
Beckwith of Austinburg Rd and Forrest Beckwith and Leslie Beckwith at
the family home here; a granddaughter, Mrs. Charles Taylor of
Washington Blvd and two great grandchildren.
His wife, Alice and twin sons, Clarence and Ralph, preceded him in
death. Mr. Beckwith was born in Geneva Township Aug. 1, 1856 the oldest
son of William and Adaline Beckwith. His 97 years of life saw many
signs of progress in Ashtabula County and he could recall when Bridge
and Lake St ?? W. 50th St and Lake Ave were mud quagmires.

Benjamin Laubach, 72, Ex-CEI Official, Dies
Benjamin Laubach, 72, of 4226 Valley View Blvd, died at Ashtabula
General Hospital at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, after a lingering illness.
He was born Oct. 20, 1880 in Marne MI. A retired superintendent of the
Eastern Division of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co, he was
widely known throughout Ashtabula, Lake and Geauga counties, both for
his work during 28 years in the electric service field, and for his
numerous civic activities.
A native of Michigan, where he attended Michigan State college, Mr.
Laubach went to Conneaut in 1904 and entered employment of the
Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co. In 1907, he became associated with
the Tungstoller Co. in Conneaut, remaining with that concern until
1912, when he was made superintendent of the Conneaut Electric Light Co
plant, which at
