Death Claims Williamsfield’s “Girl in Window”
Williamsfield – Youngsters riding the Pymatuning Lake Rd school bus to Williamsfield School will be missing a familiar face
when they return to their daily ride in the fall.
Little Donna Marie Smith, 9, will no longer wave to them
from her front window as they go to and from school. Little Donna died
Saturday.
The pretty youngster, crippled since birth and unable to
attend school herself, waited each morning and evening for the bus to come by
and waved energetically to the more fortunate children who were able to do the
one thing she wanted to do more than anything else. She had a longing to go to
school like the other children. But not being able to she made the most of it
and complained little, if at all, to her aunt, Mrs. Alpha Moreland, with whom
she lived. Donna settled for a chance to wave to the others as they, perhaps
reluctantly, went to classes daily. Just before school was out in May, the
children riding the bus gave a party for the little girl. (cont

Apartment Blaze Kills John Kiester
Ashtabula
– John A. Kiester, 83, a retired electrician, died early this morning in a fire
which swept his side of a two-apartment home on Grove Dr. An overheated furnace was the
cause, according to city firemen who were called to the home at 3:40 a.m.
today. Firemen, who reported that intense heat was created by the blaze, found
Mr. Kiester’s body near a doorway in the first floor front room of his apartment.
Asleep on Couch
Mr. Kiester apparently had been asleep on a front room couch
and upon discovering the fire attempted to reach the doorway to the dining room
before being overcome by smoke. Coroner C. C. roller this morning ruled Mr.
Kiester’s death was due to suffocation, with his entire body surface being
burned. His granddaughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Mead, who occupy a
rear apartment of the home escaped safely, firemen
reported.
Flames Spread
Firemen said the fire spread from the basement to the dining
room floor and worked its way up to the attic before they were called. Flames
were coming out the windows of the frame dwelling when they arrived on the
scene, they said.
Mr. Kiester was a retired employee of the CEI. He was born
in Cherry Valley, July 4, 1871, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Elijah Kiester. He lived all of his life in the county and resided in Ashtabula for 52 years. A
