ALDEN WALKER OBITUARY

SAYBROOK

June 23 - Rev. Alden Walker, a pioneer resident went to rest Friday, last, aged 74 years one month.  In the year 1822, from Mass. came Charles Walker with his large family of children (the deceased then being about seven years old) and purchased a large track of land in the central part of Saybrook township, which was then a continuous wild, where roamed the wild bear and herded the timorous deer; and with others, entered into a system of effort which has resulted in our present fair heritage.  For over 67 years Mr. Walker has been prominent in our township history.  In the year 1847, the deceased became a member of the Erie Conference, and for 10 years was an itinerant minister, the balance of the time located.  Thirty years he has been the faithful station agent of the L.S. Co. continuing in their service until failing health, precluded farther effort.  "Uncle Alden" Walker, a man of marked abilities genial in disposition, correct and consistent in his Christian profession, commanded the respect of all.  The funeral services were at the M. E. Church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Seeley, assisted by Rev. Mr. Jewell of the Congregational Church officiated.  The Messrs, Charles Simonds, J. F. Burke, Vernon Burke and Earnest Branch, all natives of Saybrook and at present professionals located at Cleveland were in attendance at the obsequies above mentioned.
