  Uncovered Treasures

Many times, during our various trips to antique stores, yard sales or estate auctions, we run across items (Obits; Newspapers; Letters; Deeds; Photos; Funeral Cards; Bibles; Marriages; etc.) that have no connection to our own family, but pique our interest as we know that they belong to someone. This page will be available for posting those "found treasures" for Ashtabula Co. with hopes of returning them to a descendant. If you would like to add to this site, please drop Annette a note with Uncovered Treasures - Ashtabula in the subject line.

Please Note.... "For Sale" items will not be posted, but costs for reimbursement (postage etc.) would be acceptable.

HICKOK

Posted 8/25/06

I just bought an 1879 Hickok letter on line, thinking that it might be some of my relatives, but find instead that it was written by Sarah Stevens of Jefferson/ Ashtabula Ohio to her daughter Belle Stevens Hickok. It is mostly about spring sugaring activities and poultry sales.  If  you know of anyone who would like a copy (although it is pale and might not scan well) I would be happy to send one to them, or the letter is available at my cost of 10.00.

CASE

I have an old Bible that was once the possesion of the CASE family from Ashtabula County.
I do not see any researchers of this name on your site but someone may be interested in recovering it in the future.
Description of the Family Record.
Most prominent are the names CASE and MINER.
Thanks for any help in finding the right home for it.

NAYKKI

Posted 2/02
I have found a book which has written inside the front cover:  John Naykki, Conneaut, Ohio 1925.  The other one has Esko Naykki, 1931, 977 Buffalo St, Conneaut, Ohio.  I have looked on the internet and have not been able to find much on the Naykki family. The books were found in the basement of a home on Center Road in Conneaut.  I am wondering if any member of this family is still living and if they would like to have this English-Finish dictionary and Finish Luther (Bible ? or prayer) book and if they are precious family objects.  If you know anything about this family please let me know.  Thank you. nanan

MAY

Posted 4/02
While going through a box of old papers of my families--I found a small New Testament printed in 1842 and on the inside cover is written in pencil "D.C. Dawes book presented by Mrs Kellog May 1st 1842, Cherry Valley, Ashtabula Co Ohio".

I have NO idea how this came into the family possessions. I know that family did move through Ohio on it's way to Indiana and then to Wisconsin.

Anyone have any clues?

Corn Cobb Orchestra

Posted 12/02

My name is Gerard Dole. I live in Paris, France. I work at the Laboratoire d'Anthropologie Visuelle et Sonore du Monde Contemporain of the University Paris VII as a music historian specialising in 19th century american popular music.

Lately, I bought on ebay, a cabinet card of THE CORN COBB ORCHESTRA, taken about 1890 : five young musicians (fife, fiddles, celo and triangle) smoking corn cob pipes.

On the back of the picture is written : in red pencil " Beckwith " - in black pencil " THE CORN COBB ORCHESTRA, about 1890 " and printed " Blakleslee & Moore, Photographers, Asthabula, O. "

I believe this is a most precious trace of local history which deserve much respect and should be closely analysed to try and learn who the members of Corn Cobb orchestra were (obviously a play on words : corn " cob " pipes and the family name " Cobb ") and fully understand their musical skills and repertoire.

Could anyone possibly provide more information about these five musicians? (names, dates and places of birth and death, their musical training, their musical reperoire, etc.)

I would be most grateful. It will be most valuable for my work and for America's popular music history too.
