Ashtabula County, OHGenWeb Rosters of Ohio Soldiers in War of 1812 - The Old Grey Men of the Ghost Ship Militia

The
following men are described in this paragraph as being the old grey men
of the Ghost Ship militia in the war of 1812 battle of Lake
Erie Captain Oliver Hazard Perry loyalists.
The ship crew mustered in as loyalist on the McAdam ship, were
farmers, merchants, and sailors from Conneaut, Kingsville and
Ashtabula. They were men in their forties and fifties, or at
least most of them. All with families, all early settlers in the
area. Stephan Yeamans, Joshua Nettleton, Stephen Beckwith,
Levi and Asa Amsden, Gideon Leet, Peleg Sweet, Daniel Dobbins, William
Jones, Asama Castle, Enoch Fuller, Silas Tinker, Harvey Newton, William
Wheeler, Ezekial Sheldon, James Harper and Solomon Wright were among
the thirty men. All loyalist for the cause, to defend and protect the
harbors and families of Ashtabula Co Ohio. Each received a ten dollar
gold piece for their service.
After the battle of Sept 10th 1812, they were for generations to come
referred to as "the old grey men of the Ghost ship Militia"
