Scioto County was formed March 24, 1803 from Adams County.  It takes its name from the
Native American word Scionto, meaning deer, and is located at the confluence of the
Scioto and Ohio Rivers.

The largest city, Portsmouth, is also the County Seat with the courthouse being built in 1936.
