Lewis Miller

July 24, 1829 – February 17, 1899

Lewis Miller The First Methodist Episcopal Church that was on the corner of Broadway and Church Streets in Akron, Ohio, was destroyed by a fire, On August 30, 1911.

Lewis Miller was born in Greentown, Stark County, Ohio. on Augest the 24, 1829, the youngest of three sons of John and Elizabeth (York) Miller,.

Worked as a Plasterer,& Teacher. between 1846 and 1851. In 1851 became a member of Ball, Altman & Co., which manufactured stoves, plows, threshers,and repers.

Founded Aultman, Miller & Co,in 1865, which made farm machinery. Invented the Buckeye mower & reaper, and the Table-rake(1865). Plus many other labor-saveing devices.

The firm of Aultman, Miller & Co. was organized in 1865, with a capital of $300,000, since increased to $1,000,000, for the exclusive purpose of manufacturing these machines. The headquarters and main works of the company are located at Akron.1

School board member for many years. Was connected to Mount Union Collage, Ohio Wesleyan University and Allegheny Collage. Founded the first Sunday School of the First M. E. Church. Where he was the Superintendent. Was a member of the City Council.

Was Married on Sept 16,1853, to Mary Valinda Alexander, of Plainefiesd, Ill., They had eleven Children, Jennie, Ira M., Edward B., Robert A., Lewis A., Mina, Mamie, Grace, John V. and Theodore W. Eva died when 16.

the first First M. E. Church was built on the northwest corner of Broadway and Church. In 1841, this building was destroyed by fire. In 1867, industrialist Lewis Miller and local architect, Jacob Snyder began to plan for a new church building (pictured above). Dedicated in 1871, it too was destroyed by a fire, On August 30, 1911.

On February 24, 1886, Mina Miller became the second wife of Thomas A., Edison. They were married at the Lewis Miller mansion in Akron, Ohio which still stands to this day.

Miller died February 17, 1899 of Kidney disease and was buried in Glendale Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.
