1825 - In the 1820's with the commerce developing from the opening of the Ohio canal, a man by the name of James BROWN formed a counterfeiting ring, "the blacklegs," in the Akron, Ohio area. Historian Samuel A. LANE, sheriff of Akron, Ohio and editor of THE BUZZARD wrote under the pen name of "Jedediah Brownhead, Esq.," in 1825, about James BROWN and his followers. "---For your own protection, you should note the stature of the men who have taken up storekeeping in the little neighboring town of Boston. They are William G. TAYLOR of Cleveland; Abraham S. HOLMES, Col. William ASHLEY of Boston; William LATTA of Bath; Jonathan DECOURCEY and Thomas JOHNSON of Norton; Joshua KING and Joe KEELER of Portage. --- These men are counterfeiters; and on a vast and damaging scale."
William Donohue Ellis, THE CUYAHOGA, p.133-142; Karl H. Grismer, AKRON and SUMMIT COUNTY, p.108-112.
"During the early times in Norton township, much counterfeit money was in circulation and suspicion pointed to persons then living at Johnson's Corners. One DECOURSEY was generally considered to be the ring-leader of the whole crookedness. He was a sharp, shrewd man -- one who seemed to know all that was going on in the whole neighborhood; for no sooner did the justice issue a warrant for his arrest, than he took to the woods, where he would remain until the storm had blown over, when he would again make his appearance. At one time, when the constable came to arrest him, DECOURSEY spied him coming and quick as thought he pulled off his coat, tossed it to George Beach, who was with him at the time, saying 'Put on that coat and streak for the woods.' Beach did not wait to be told a second time but 'streaked.' The constable and posse took after him full speed. Beach ran until he thought he had carried the joke far enough, when he turned around and faced the music with the remark: 'What do you want?' 'Sucked by----!' said the constable. DECOURSEY in the meantime had time to escape.---"

There is some speculation (without hard evidence) that some of the counterfeit money circulated by James BROWN and his gang might have been used to reimburse the loses of Harmon BLENNERHASSET who earlier had helped finance Aaron BURR's planned invasion of Mexico. This may have been a possibility, since Jonathan DECOURSEY'S uncle, Benjamin RACER of Marietta, Ohio, was a neighbor and acquaintance of Harmon BLENNERHASSETT, one of the co-conspirators with BURR and the one that furnished much of the financing for the ill fated scheme. 1830c- Reminiscences of Philip FRITZ. "---Samuel and John FRITZ, Isaac DECOURCEY, John HUFFMAN, and myself went up to Chippewa lake to hunt, and took our provisions with us. I was left in charge of the eatables, and the balance went to the woods to hunt. While I was watching the provisions eight Indians approached me, and I was terribly frightened. They at once commenced laying off their knives, guns and tomahawks, and advancing to where I had a large fire built, one of them, who could speak English, said, 'White man foolish; makes big fire and sits away off; Indian makes little fire and sits up close.' They then went to the edge of the lake and began jumping on the muskrat houses, and just as fast as the inmate popped out they popped him, and so they kept on until out of one of these largest mud-houses sprang a beaver, which was instantly killed, and then they whooped and danced and drank.---" Douglas's HISTORY OF WAYNE COUNTY, p.631.
