Early Funeral Homes in Trumbull County

Many of the early undertakers were furniture makers as well. The reason for the furniture and undertaking combination was that the early pioneers needed furniture, and when a death occured during those difficult years, they also needed caskets. Early furniture makers also "undertook" the difficult & emotional task of preparing the body, thus the name Undertaker. Also during the 1850's the trend was to have funeral services in homes or in churches and chairs were needed in addition to caskets so the alliance between furniture manufacturing and caring funeral services were linked from the beginning.

Next to the hatter's shop stood a two-story building, in which Samuel Chesney lived and had a cabinet shop. The sop was upstairs and could be reached by an outside stairway. Mr. Chesney's work was manufacturing a general line of furniture and coffins. This trade has gone the way of the hatter's-- into large establishments. 1
