Will of Elisha Coon, ca 1724/7-1778


In The Name of God Amen this Eighth Day of May in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven I Elisha Coon of Hopkinton in Kings county & State of Rhode Island & Providence plantation yeoman being sick and in a very poor State of health but of sound and composed mind and memory thanks be given to almighty God for the same and calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that all flesh must yield unto Death when it shall please God to call Do make and ordain this to be my last will and Testament that is to say first and principally of all I Give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body I commit to the Earth to be buried in Decent christian burial at the Descretion of my Executor hereafter named and as Touching such Worldly Estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give order and Dispose of the same in manner & form following (viz)  

First I Will that all those Debts which I Doe [sic] owe of right to any person with my funeral charges be well and truly content and paid by my Executor hereafter named out of my personal estate in a convenient time after my Decease ---

Imprimus I Give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Anne Coon the third part of the profits or improvement of all my real Estate with the best room in my now Dwelling house with a third part of the priviledge of the cellar and barn all which I give to my sd wife Anne During the time she shall remain my widow. Likewise I give to my sd wife one cow ten sheep one horse one side saddle & bridle together with one third part of all my household goods the best bed and furniture I have to be contained within the sd third part of sd goods all which I give to my sd wife her heirs and assigns forever In lieu of her right of Dower & power of thirds  

Item I Give & bequeath unto my beloved sone [sic] Elisha Coon Jr one Dollar to be paid him by my Executor out of my personal Estate & the reason I Give him no more is that I have already given him a perportionable [sic] part of my Estate

Item I Give & bequeath unto my three beloved sones [sic] (namely Asa Coon, Abram Coon & James Coon all my lands consisting of the farm I now live on in Hopkinton in the county and state aforesd to be equally Divided in quantity between them my said three sones [sic] that is to say Asa Coon shall have his part or lot of sd lands on the south part of sd farm Divided or set off to him with a parellel [sic] line with the south line of the lands my Father gave me as aforesd & a parelline [sic] with the south line of the lands I bought of Thomas Foster so as to take a third part of the sd lands I bought of the sd Foster --- & Abram Coon shall have his sd part set off to him in like manner that is to say he shall a parelline [sic] with sd Asa's line or lott of land so as to take a third part of the lands my Father gave me and a third part of the lands I bought of Thomas Foster it lying on the north of sd Asa's lott of land & being the middle or centre lott of sd Farm & James Coon shall have the remainder part of my sd Farm & bounding on the north side of sd Abrams lott it being the north part of my sd Farm so as to contain a third part of the lands my sd Father gave me & a third part of the lands I bought of Thomas Foster the whole being or to be Divided with parel [sic] lines from the south line of the sd lands my sd Father gave me & the south line of the land I bought of Thomas Foster being Equal in quantity to be Divided between them my said three sons all which lands I give to them my sd three sons namely Asa Coon Abram Coon & James Coon their heirs and assigns forever Except their mothers right of Dower & power of thirds During the time she shall remain my widow meaning that they my sd three sons Asa Coon Abram Coon & James Coon they or either of them or their heirs shall enter and take possession of their sd lott or piece of land so set off to them as aforesd at the time they or either of them shall or should arrive to the age of twenty one years should or Do they survive to sd age & that no one of my sd three sons take or have possession of his sd part before he shall arrive to sd age of twenty one years   Further my will is that if Either of my sd three sones (namely) Asa Coon Abram Coon or James Coon should Die before they shall arive [sic] to the age of age of [sic] twenty one years leaving no lawful Isue [sic] then in that case their part or lott of sd land shall be equally Divided between the survivors of all the brothers (namely Elisha Coon Jur Abel Coon Asa Coon Abram Coon & James Coon meaning that if any one should Die leaving lawful issue in that case his sd Isue [sic] to have his sd Fathers part to be to them their heirs & assigns forever

Item I Give & bequeath unto my beloved Daughter bethany Satterly one Dollar to be paid her by my Executor hereafter named out of my personal estate and the reason I give her nomore is that I have already given her a perportionable [sic] part of my Estate

Item I give & bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Anne Crandall one good bed and furniture & one cow to be Delivered to her by my Executor out of my personal Estate at the time when she shall go to Keeping house

Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Hannah Coon one good bed and furniture & one cow to be Delivered her by my executor here after named out of my personal Estate at the time she shall arive [sic] to the age of Eighteen years or Day of marriage &c

Item I Give & bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Olive Coon one good bed and furniture and one cow to be Delivered to her by my Executor here after named out of my personal Estate at the time she shall arive [sic] to the age of Eighteen years or Day of marriage &c

Further My will is that if either of my sd Daughters (namely) Bethany Satterly Anne Crandall Hannah Coon or Olive Coon should Die leaving no Isue [sic] then in that case their part or legacy to be Divided Equally between the survivors of the sd sisters &c

Item I give and bequeath unto all my beloved sones [sic] (namely) Elisha Coon Jur Abel Coon Asa Coon Abram Coon & James Coon all my wareing [sic] apparel & all my Farming Eutensils [sic] to be equally Divided between them my sd five sones [sic] as afore named & to be Delivered out by my Executor here after named &c  

Furthermore My will is that my wife Anne Coon have & take the charge of my Family consisting of all my children under age & that she have the profits & improvement of the two thirds of all my lands untill the time or times my three youngest sons arive [sic] to the age of twenty one years with all my provisions as of necessaries of life consisting of corn meat flax & two thirds of my household good (Except three beds) with two cows one pare [sic] of oxen ten sheep & all my hogs all which I mean to be for the support of bringing up and schooling my children under age as afore sd at the Descretion of my sd wife Anne Coon provided she remain my widow untill the sd children shall arive [sic] to the lawful age of Freedom & Futher if any part of the aforegoing article of the last paregraph [sic] or the prophats [sic] thereof should not be expended in the support of my Family and bringing up my children as afrore sd at the time when the youngest of my sd children surviving shall or may arive [sic] to lawful age of freedom my sd wife Anne Coon is to Deliver up all sd part so not Expanded [sic] to my Executor hereafter named &c

But if my sd wife Anne Coon should Marry after my Decease my will is that my Executor here after named shall take the above mentioned Estate on this page & bring up my children as full & as amply and in to same manner as my sd wife is to should she not marry & She my sd wife Anne to quit all of my Estate Except the personal Estate given to her my sd wife in the first bequeath of this my will provided she accept of the bequeath here in given her In lieu of her right of Dower & power of thirds.  but if she should not Except said bequeaths as aforesd then in that case she is to quit all the personall [sic] Estate and have her thirds of the profits of the land only as her lawful Dower &c

Item I Give and bequeath unto my four beloved Daughters (namely) Bethany Satterly Anne Crandall Hannah Coon & Mary Coon all the remainder part of my Estate that is not heretofore in this my will given away to be equally Divided between them - to be Delivered to them my sd four Daughters by my Executor hereafter named &c

And Lastly I hereby Make & Ordain my trusty & well beloved sone [sic] Asa Coon to be my whole and sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament here by Revoking and Disannuling all other Wills and Executors by me heretofore made Ratifying and confirming this only to be my last Will and Testament

In Witness Whereof I have here unto set my hand and affixed my seal the Day month and year first within written &c

Personally Appeared In the town council of Hopkinton the 4th Day of May AD 1778 Mis___ (not Misters) Nathan Tanner Jonathan West & Abel Tanner witnesses to the will & made oath that they saw Elisha Coon the testator sign seal publish & Declare this Instrument to be his last will & Testament & that they signed in presents of the testator & Each other & that the testator was in his perfect mind & memory

The above & foregoing is a true coppy [sic] of the original Will & probated & Entered on record the 11th Day of May 1778
