Will of Jeremiah Sweet of Exeter, RI 

ca 1676 - 1760


In the Name of God amen the Twentieth Day of July in the Thirtieth year of his Majesties Reign George the Second King of Great Britain AD 1756 I Jeremiah Sweet of Exeter in the County of Kings County and Colony of Rhode Island yeoman Being Old and Full of Days and Somewhat Discomposed as to my Bodily Health yet notwithstanding of a Sound Disposing Mind and Memory thanks be given to God therefore Calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed for all men Once to Die Do make and Ordain this Instrument in Writing my Last will and Testament that is to Say Principally and first of all I give and Recommend my Soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body I Freely Submit to the Earth to be therein Decently Buried at the Discretion of my Executor herein after named and as Touching Such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath Pleased God to bless me with in this Life I give and Dispose of the Same in the Following Manner and form and first my Will is that all my Just Debts and Funeral Charges be well and Truly Paid out of my Moveable Estate by my Executor in Some Convenient time after my Decease.

Imprimis I Give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Ruth Niles Two Shillings in Money or Passable Bills of Publik Credit of this Colony thinking that to be a Sufficient Portion with what She hath already had.

Item I Give and Bequeth unto my Son Samuel Sweet five Shillings in Money or Bills of Credit as abovesaid he having Received his Portion.

Item I Give and Bequeath unto the Heir of My Daughter Elizabeth Sweet Deceased the Sum of Five Shillings in Money or Bills as aforesaid I thinking that to be a Sufficient Portion with what his or her Mother hath already had.

Item I Give and Bequeath unto the Heir of My Son John Sweet Deceased Five Shillings in Money as afforesaid he having Received his Portion ----------------------------------------------

and my Will is that all the above Legacies be Paid by my Executor in one year after my Decease.

Item I Give and Bequeath unto my Son George Sweet the Feather Bed and Furniture thereunto Belonging that I now Lye on and also my Chest and my Great Chair.

Item I give and Bequeath unto my Son Jeremiah Sweet the Feather Bed and Furniture that I used to Tell him he Should have and also my Great Pot and my Great Table.

Item I give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Isabell Sweet the Bed and Furniture that I used to Tell her that She Should have as also my Small Pot and Kittle and Iron Trammel one Small Table and Looking Glass one Spice Morter and Pestle one Jug.

Item I give and Bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Ruth Sweet the Daughter of my Son John Sweet Deceased one Feather Bed and Furniture thereunto Belonging.

Item And Lastly I give and Bequeath all the Remaining Part of My Moveable Estate to my Son Jeremiah Sweet and to my Daughter Isabell Sweet to be Equally divided Between them.

I Have also Nominated Constituted and Appointed my Son George Sweet my Whole and Sole Executor to this my Last will Testament to Execute the Same in Manner as above said and I Do also hereby Utterly Disallow Disanull Revoke and by these Presents make Void all and every other former will or Wills Executor or Executor Legacies and Bequeaths by me at any time heretofore Named or Made or in any Wise Caused to be made or Named Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my Last will and Testament.

Whereas George Sweet Executor to the Last will and Testament of Jeremiah Sweet Late, of Exeter in the County of Kings County Deceased Appeared before the Town Council of Said Exeter on the 8th Day of July A.D. 1760 and Presents Said Will in Order for a Probate and also one of the witnesses to Said Will Girffin appeared at the Same time and on his Solemn Engagement Declared that he Saw the Testator to with the Said Jeremiah Sweet now Deceased Sign Seal Pronounce and Declare the Same to be his Last will and Testament and that in his Presents he set his hand as a witness at that time and that according to the Best of his Judgement the Testator was then in his Perfect mind and Memory and that he saw Mary Olen who as it appears to this Council to be Deceased and Samuel Sweet Jur. who is gone into the Expedition against Canada Sign as Witness at the Same time with him and for that Reason Said Will is allowed a Lawful Probate.

Will of John Sweet of Exeter, RI 

ca 1715 - 1756

In the Name of God Amen I John Sweet of Exeter in Kings County and Colony of Rhode Island & Being Sick of Body but in my Right Mind and Memory Thanks be to God for it and Calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed unto men once to Die Do make and ordain this my last will and Testament (viz) first of all I give and Bequeath my Soul unto God and my Body unto the Dust to be Buryed in Decent manner at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter named and as Touching such worldly goods and Estate as it hath pleased God to Bless me with in this Life I give and Dispose of the same in manner and form as followeth.

Imprimis I give and Bequeath unto my Two Sons Jeremiah Sweet and George Sweet my homested farm where on I now Dwell to be Equally Divided Between them Quantity according to Quality after my Decease and to Remain unto them and their heirs and Assigns forever.

Item I give and Bequeath unto my Three Daughters Isabel and Elisabeth and Ruth Sweet each of them a Trammel Also I order my Two Sons Jeremiah Sweet and George Sweet to pay back my Daughters Ten pounds apiece at eighteen years of age or at their marriage.

Item I give and Bequeath unto my Two Sons Jeremiah Sweet and George Sweet all my farming Tools Equally to be Divided between them and freely to be possessed by them after my Decease.

Item I give and Bequeath unto my True and Loving wife Abigail Sweet all my indoor moveables Except the three Trammels Before mentioned and all my Stock and money Notes and Bonds Due to me freely to be possessed by her after my Decease: and also I order that She Shall have the Best Room in my house and her Thirds of my lands During her widowhood and I do appoint my wife my sole Executrix in this my last Will and Testament and I order my Executrix To pay all my Just Debts and I do here by Revoke Disallow and Disanull all other wills and Testaments formerly made by me this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament In Witness where of I have here unto sett my hand and seal this Seventy day of February and in the Twenty Ninth year of his Majesties Reign George the Second by the Grace of God King of Great Brittain, France and Ireland Defender of the faith & Ad 1756.

Mr. Samuel Albro and Samuel Sweet Two of the witnesses within named personally appeared In the Town Council of Exeter the 11th Day of May A.D. 1756 and on there Solemn Oath Declared that they did see the above and within Named John Sweet Sign Seal publish pronounce and Declare the above and with in Instrument To be his last will and Testament and that at the Signing thereof he was of a Sound Disposing (?) mind and that they Two and in his presence Signed there unto as witnesses and also Did see freelove Sweet sign there unto as a witness and in his presence signed by order and Behalf of the Town Council of Exeter the day above said ____.

Will of Samuel Sweet of Exeter   (? - 1761)


In the Name of God Amen the Twenty fourth Day of March and in the First Year of his Majesties Reign George the Third King of Great Britain &c. and in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty one, I Samuel Sweet of Exeter in the County of Kings County and in Colony of Rhodeisland &c. Yeoman being Sick and Weak in Body and very much Discomposed as to my Bodily Health Yet Notwithstanding of a Sound Disposing Mind and memory Thanks be to Almighty God for the Same and Calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and Knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Die Do make and ordain this Instrument in Writing my Last Will and Testament that is to say Principally and first of all I give and Recommend by Spirit into the Hands of God that gave it me and my Body I freely submit to the Earth to be therein Decently Buried at the Discretion of my Executrix and Executor herein after Named and as Touching Such Worldly Estate. Wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me in this Life I give & Dispose of the Same in the Following Manner and form and first my will is that all my Just Debts Last Sickness and Funeral Charges be well and Truly Paid & Satisfied by my Executrix and my Executors out of my moveable Estate in Some Convenient time after my Decease.

Imprimis    I give and Bequeath unto my Eldest Son Samuel Sweet the Sum of Fifteen Pounds in Money or in Passable Bills of publik Credit of the old Tenor to be paid to him by my Executrix or Executor within Two years after my Decease I thinking that to be his full Portion and Proportion in my Small Estate.

Item    I give and Bequeath unto my Second Son Jonathan Sweet the Sum of Fifteen Pounds in Money or in Passable Bills as afforsaid to be paid to him by my Executrix or Executors within Two Years after my Decease I thinking that to be his full Share.

Item    I give and Bequeath unto my Eldest Daughter Ruth Sweet the Sum of Thirty Pounds in Money or in passable Bills as abovesaid to be paid to her by my Executrix or Executor within Two Years after my Decease I thinking that to be her full part.

I tem    I give and Bequeath unto my Second Daughter Sarah Sweet the Sum of Fifteen Pounds in Money or in passable Bills as aforesaid to be paid to her by my Executrix or Executor within two years after my Decease She having had part of her portion already.

Item   I give and Bequeath unto my Third Daughter Freelove Croel (the Sum of) one Chest to be delivered  to her by my Executrix or Executor Immediately after my Decease She having Received the greater part of her Portion already.

Item   I give and Bequeath unto my Fourth Daughter Isbell Sweet the Sum of Fifty Pounds in Money or in passable Bills of the Colonly of Rhodeisland old Tenor to be paid to her by my Executrix or Executor (to be paid to) when she Arrives to the age of Eighteen Years or the Day of her Marriage which May First Happen.

Item   I give and Bequeath unto my Fifth Daughter Mary Sweet the Sum of Thirty Pounds in Mondy or in Passable Bills as afforsaid to be paid to her by my Executrix or Executor When She Arrives to the age of Eighteen Years or the Day of her Marriage Which may first happen.

Item  I give and Bequeath unto my Sixth Daughter Elizabeth Sweet the Sum of Thirty Pounds in Money or in passable Bills as afforsaid to be paid  to her by my Executrix or Executor When She Arrives to the age of Eighteen Years or the Day of her Marriage Which may first happen.

Item  I give and Bequeath unto my True and Loving Wife Sarah Sweet all the Rents and Profits of my Lands and Real Estate untill my Two Youngest Sons Arrive to the age of one and Twenty years I also give unto my Said Wife all my moveable Estate Excepting what I have herein heretofore Disposed of and my Farming Tackling which Farming Tackling I Lend to my Said Wife untill my Two Youngest Sons shall come to the age of one and Twenty Years or so long as she Remains my Widow & no Longer all Which I give and Lend to her to the bringing up of my Small Children and for paying all my Just Debts and Legacies.

Item  I give and Bequeath unto my Two Youngest Sons To Wit, Albro Sweet and Job Sweet all and Singular my Lands and Real Estate with all the appertance therewith Belonging to be Equally Divided Between them which I Do hereby give to them their Heirs & Assigns forever I also give to my Two Last Mentioned Sons all and Singular my Farming Tackling of what name Seven and if it Should happen that either of my Two last mentioned Sons Should happen to Dye without Issue then he that Exc__th to have the part of his that is Deceased and if neither of my Two Sons Should Decease before nor at the time of Division then all the Farming Tackling to be Equally Divided as my Real Estate.

Item and Lastly  I Do hereby Nominate Constitute make and ordain my True and Living Wife Sarah Sweet my Executrix and also my Son Albro Sweet and my Brother George Sweet Executors of this my Last Will and Testament to See the Same fullfilled according to the True Intent and meaning thereof and I __ also hereby utterly Disallow Disannul Revoke and by these Presents make void all & Every other former will or Wills Executrix or Executors by me at any time heretofore made Willed or Bequeathed or in any Wise caused to be Named or Made Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my Last will and Testament.  In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the Day Month and Year afore mentioned

Griffen Sweet and William Tanner Two of the Witnesses to the above Will Personally appeared in Town Council of Exeter the 16th Day of June AD 1761 and on their Solemn Engagement Declared that they Saw the above Testator Samuel Sweet Sign Seal Publish Pronounce and Declare the afore Written Instrument to be his Last will and Testament and that they Two Signed as Witnesses thereto at the Same time and in his Presence and they they Saw the other Witness Deliverance Tanner Sign as a Witness Thereto at the Same time and in his Presence and that the Testator was then at the Same time of a Sound Disposing Mind and Memory for Which Reason Said Will is allowed to be Lawfully Proved and approved of
