RIGenWeb Mailing List
This mailing list is for discussions with others who are

or historical interests in Rhode Island.
Search the RIGenWeb
Mailing List Archived Messages
Search tips are provided on the page. Check the Archives
before posting - your query may have already been answered!
Below are a few rules and some helpful information
-
After you send a subscription request
using the instructions provided below, you will receive a message confirming
that, "You have been added to the subscriber list of: RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com"
-
If you would like to post a message so everyone on the mailing
list receives it, just send it to RIGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com
-
DON'T send attachments to the list. (Signatures are
okay.) The message will be returned to you. This isn't a problem for the
mail server, but can cause some subscribers' machines to lock up, make
them lose all their mail, even crash their hard drive!
-
If you have a large file, try splitting it into smaller sections
and sending 1 of 4, 2 of 4, etc. OR, send a message to the list offering
to send the information privately.
-
If you are switching Internet Service Providers (ISP), or
changing your e-mail address, *PLEASE* unsubscribe from the old address
first and then re-subscribe at your new address.
-
The most important key on your keyboard is the DELETE key.
If you don't like a message, delete it. Don't send a cutting or snide remark
back to the list. The rest of us don't want to read it, and it just adds
to the clutter of useless messages.
-
DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE (SEND ARGUMENTATIVE OR CRITICAL MESSAGES)
ON THE LIST. IF YOU ARE FLAMED, DO NOT RESPOND VIA THE LIST! (P.S. - Don't
type in all caps, it looks like you are shouting.)
-
Please stay on topic and close to the subject. (Keep in mind
that history is an important part of genealogy. Current topics usually
are not.)
-
If you have a personal message for someone, please send it
to their address, not the list server address. Any mail sent to RIGENWEB-L
will automatically be sent to everyone on the list.
Some common problems
You tried to unsubscribe and RootsWeb
says you're not a subscriber, yet you're getting mail.
Send yourself a message and see how your address appears
in the header of the message. **Usually** (if you're getting this error)
they won't be the same. ISP (Internet service providers) are notorious
for changing your address, adding "mail" or "pop" or some other term to
it - or taking it away.
You get a "bad command" error.
Check your spelling. I see "unscribe", "un-scibe" and
about every other variation imaginable. You have to spell stuff right!
Follow instructions - to the letter. If you leave something
out of a command or put something extra in, it probably won't work.
