Here is what was written about Capt. David Gifford by William Field Reed
in "The Descendants of Thomas Durfee of Portsmouth, R.I.":
"David Gifford was highly esteemed by his fellow townsmen, and was,
by their choice, made active and prominent in military and civil life.
He was chosen by the General Assembly of Rhode Island to perform various
military duties. In 1775, he was appointed Lieutenant in the first militia
company of Portsmouth, of which, in 1776, he became Captain. In December,
1776, he received permission to proceed to Rhode Island with a flag of
truce to secure an exchange of soldiers belonging to his company, that
were prisoners of war in the hands of the British. In August, 1777,
he was appointed a Lieutenant in Major Munroe's Co. He also commanded
some boating parties. There is no personal record of his presence with
the army during August, 1778, when the movement under General Sullivan
took place. Without doubt he did his duty well. He was a recruiting
officer in 1780, and was a member of the General Assembly in 1777 and 1780." |
