James Means

South Carolina Union District

Whereas, I James Means of the district and (stati) afore said having made and duly executed my last Will and testament in writing bearing date the twenty third day of January in the year of our lord eighteen hundred and thirty nine; now I do hereby declare this present writing to be as a codicil to be as a codicil to my said will and direct the same to be annexed thereto and taken as a part thereof. Whereas by the fourth Item in said Will I have stated the amount of advancements then made to certain of my children these named which have been since increased and some of my children therein named have since married and been advanced, now I hereby declare the following advancements made since the date of my will aforesaid with which they are to be respectively charged towit,

 

Sarah Patton has received nineteen hundred and sixty seven dollars, in a family of negroes, Fann & her child Bob and Anthony, not her child, together with cash advanced to her & the expenses of lending out the negroes, which sum is to be added to the thirteen hundred dollars charged in my will.

To my son Harvey H. Means I have advanced two negroes, Minter and Luce, to be accounted for at six hundred dollars each, and one hundred dollars in cash making the sum of thirteen hundred dollars to be added to the eighteen hundred dollars charged in my Will.

To my daughter Dorcas who has intermarried with Jesse Gordan, I have advanced twenty four hundred dollars, towit in December 1841. Fifteen hundred dollars, & since two negroes , Cass and Mark, valued at nine hundred dollars.

To my daughter Isabella I have advanced twenty four hundred dollars in negroes towit, Giles, Dinah, Ralph, Cot, Green & Wallase, my said daughter having recently married James R. Brandon.

Item 2: I hereby revoke so much of the fourth item of my will as gives to Dorcas and Isabella one horse, & saddle, bureau, table, beds & bedstead. And in all other respects confirming my said will except as to the amount of advancements which is to be taken as stated in this codicil. In witness whereof I have hereinto set my hand and seal this tenth day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty Six.

Signed sealed & published by the Testator in our presence and have hereto subscribed our names as witnesses in his presence to this codicil to his last will and testament.
