Played professional baseball one season with the St. Louis "Nationals". See
Encyclopedia of Baseball. Baseball. His baseball alias was "Bad News" Gallaway.
One source says he died 3 May 1950 vice 5 May.
Sue Norman wrote me in April 1994, about a year before he death, "I do have
some
photos of Uncle Jim from his baseball career. It is difficult to talk about
him, because he was always Jim and Uncle Jim in the family, went by the name
Catoe in Galloway in the sports world, and picked up the nickname "Bad News"
somewhere along the line. He was a dear gentle man. He went from player to
manager of several Texas league teams, and then was a TL umpire after retiring
from active play. I have thought seriously about donating what I have to the
Texas Baseball Hall of Fame, but I have not made up my mind I really want to
part with them. I don't know what they already have about him. If they have
very little, I guess my duty is clear."
