This letter was written by my ancestors, Kittel & Liv Grimlands, eldest son to a
Henderson Co. Texas, 8th of April 1856
Unforgettable friend,
I will now take up a pen and write you a few lines to look you up. I
haven't heard
from you since we parted. You have come to mind many times with great
affection.
It still seems I can see us sitting around the table singing songs for Tellef
Engenæ and
see the other get a box on the ear and standing in the cornoer, which was a
punishment.
I went to school last summer to learn American which was for me a great
pleasue
as I can now read, write and speak so I can have just as great enjoyment
amongst
Americans as amongst Norwegians. I built a house for an American for which I
got 100 dollars. T and another man finished it in Thirty days.
I will tell you haow much I have acquired since I came here. About two
months
ago I bought a mare for which I paid 85 dollars and she is pregnant and will
have
a foal this week. I have 17 cows, large and small and three draught oxen that
are worth 100 dollars together and a wagon or cart which cost 76 dollars and
when I drive I have two to eight oxen for it. At harvest in October month I
earned 112 dollars. Nels, Ole and I are home working in the fields. Gunsten
has taken work with a man for six months and gets 14 dollars a month. And
my father has been in town for the whole winter at carpentry work and earns
a dollar a day all found. It isn't like Norway where a man must work with loads
of coal all year. When the harvest is over the man is free to sit and take on
what he wishes.
I must not forget to tell you that we have gotten a priest and Gunsten and
Nels were confirmed and the congregation has appointed me choir leader for
the church. I have not means to you other than I am 'duden til Brøkøbes:
(arranged a bride?) to an American and hope to see my sweetheart
there.
I must ask you when you get this letter not to forget to write me and let
me
know how it goes at Grimeland, Mosberg, and around and about and write how
all the boys are that I know and he same with the girls. You must greet them
all
from me very much and tell me how many of them are married. tell them at
Uxvaten and Volene that I will write them in a few days.
I must now stop my poor writing with heartfelt greetings from me to your
parents and siblings and greet Tengel Grimeland and his family and let me
know if there are may with thoughts of coming here. And herewith, I say Adieu,
Adieu from your departed friend.
