Minnie Myrtle Evans Leck
Services for Minnie Leck, 88, of Waco, a
resident of Gainesville Nursing Home, who
died Saturday morning, 23 April 1988, were held
at 11 am, Monday, 25 April, at Clifton
Funeral Home, with Dalton Graves, minister of
Clifton Church of Christ, officiating.
Burial was in Clifton Memorial Park. Daughter
of Lillie Etta Drake & Crockett Shelby
Evans, she was born 19 Jan. 1900, near Cayote
Community. She attended school at
Cayote & Clifton. She was raised on her parents
farm. According to her daughter,
Mrs. Leck was a "Daddy's Girl", who helped him
with the milking & caring of their
animals. When she was a teenager, her father
bought a house in Clifton, & because
of his declining helath, he rented the farm &
the familymoved to town. A long time
neighbor of Mrs. Leck, Cullen Robinson, now owns
& lives on the farm. When she
was 9 years old, Minnie started to play her
father's violin in secret, & when he found
out he helped her increase her knowledge of the
instrument. She played "by ear", &
played her violin on many occasins, inlcuding
the Dallas Fair when she was 12 years
old. She won a fiddler's contest at the July
4th Poole's Park around 1939, & has
played regularly with a group at the Sunset
Nursing Home in Nocona, TX since 1984.
She was married to Louis G. Leck of the Womack
community, 29 Sep. 1929, in
Meridian by Judge Word. She had one child by a
previous marriage. Louis &
Minnie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
in 1979. Mr. & Mrs. Leck lived
on several farms & ranches in Bosque & Hill
County, until he was called to military
service during WW II. When he returned, the
couple ran a little grocery store &
service station just past the Clifton Park.
They moved to Waco in 1951, living just
10 blocks from their daughter & family. Their
grandson was born in Waco in 1953.
The Lecks lived there 37 years, where she
worked at a lingerie factory & the
Greyhound bus station, & he worked for Clement
Grain Company. They were
active in the American Legion.
