Black

  * Some Black family members who came thru Burleson County Neill Black, son of Archibald and Margaret Black, was born about 1803 in North Carolina. On 29 September 1827, in Cumberland County, NC, he married Sarah Thomas. Neill, Sarah, and nine of their children were living in Gadsden County, Florida during the 1850 Census. William Wesley Black, a son of Neill and Sarah Black, was born about 1834 in Gadsden Co., FL. William married Piercy Abigail Johnson, about 1856 in Gadsden Cp., NC. Piercy was born 12 July 1840 in Georgia.

In the 1860 Census of Gadsden Co., FL, William, Piercy  a three year old son Charles and an eight month old daughter Susan C. Black are enumerated.  The 1870 Census of Liberty County, Florida has William and Piercy Black with daughters Lizzie age 10, Harriett and Henrietta, twins age 8, and a son Thomas Black age 5 years, all children born in Florida. William, Piercy and children moved from Florida to Burleson County, Texas about 1875. William Wesley Black died between 1875 and 1879. On 14 June 1880, P. A. (Piercy Abigail) Black was living in Burleson County, Texas with her children; Charley, E. A., ”Lizzie”, the twins Hattie and Etta, William T. and J. Neil Black, a 4 year old male born in Texas. Piercy Abigail Johnson Black died before 1900.

Charles M. Black, a son of William and Piercy Black, was born in 1857 in Gadsden Co., FL, married Mrs. Viola R. Blocker on 20 December 1883, in Burleson Co., TX, and died in 1939 in Burleson Co., TX. Mrs. Viola R. B. Black was born in 1863 and died in 1888 in Burleson Co., TX they are buried in the Blocker 0 Johnson Cemetery in Burleson Co., TX. Their known children are William Wallace Black born 26 February 1885. Died 3 September 1966 in Wharton County, Texas an buried in the Wharton City Cemetery;  and Earl E. Black, born in March 1887, served as a Private in 1 Cl., 102 Am. Tn., 27 Div. From Texas, died 27 July 1920,, and buried in the Blocker – Johnson Cemetery in Burleson Co., TX.

Susan C. Black, a daughter of William and Piercy Black, was born about 1859 in Gadsden Co., FL and was enumerated in the 1860 Census of Gadsden Co., FL. She was not found in any later Census.

Elizabeth Abigail “Lizzie” Black, a daughter of William and Piercy Black, was born 26 April 1860, in Gadsden Co., FL. She married William Francis Thomas, a son of James Reubin Thomas, Sr. (1823-1905) and Martha Jane Smith Thomas (1826-1876), on 25 December 1895, in Burleson Co., TX. William F. Thomas was born 6 April 1855, in Washington Co., TX, and died 25 February 1946, in Somerville, Burleson Co., TX. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Black Thomas 12 January 1950, in Somerville, Burleson Co., TX. They are buried in Somerville’s Oak Lawn Cemetery. Their known children are; Annie F. Thomas, born about 1896; Sam Dick Thomas born 21 July 1898, and died 5 July 1994; and Hugh B. Thomas born about 1901.

The twins Harriet “Hattie” and Henrietta “Etta” Black, daughters of William and Piercy Black, were born about 1862 in Gadsden County Florida. They were enumerated in the 1870 Census of Liberty County, Florida and in the 14 June1880 Census of Burleson County, Texas.

William Thomas Black, a son of William and Piercy Black, was born 9 September 1864 in Gadsden County, Florida. He married Margueretta Exima Leach on 13 August 1890, in Somerville, Burleson County, Texas and their marriage records are filed in Washington County, Texas. Margueretta was born 17 February 1869 in Burleson Co., TX and died 16 July 1933, in Murray Co., OK. William T. Black died 4 February 1946, in Murray Co., OK. William and Margueretta Black are buried in the Green Hill Cemetery in Murray Co., OK. Their known children are: Rachel Black Christy (1891-1978); William Edward Black (1892-1966); Lela B. Black (1894-1989); Martha E. Black Faulkner (1896-1978); John Henry Black (1897-1961); Myrtle Black Gibson (1899-1984); George R. Black (1902-1993); and Neal Wallace Black (1903-1993).

J. Neil Black, a son of William and Piercy Black, was born about 1876 in Burleson County, Texas. He was enumerated in the 14 June 1880 Census of Burleson Co., Texas. No additional information was found.

Malcom Black, a son of John Black and Ann McGregor Black, was born about 1818 in Lismore, Argyll County, Scotland. John and Ann Black are reported to be the parents of Archibald, Malcom, Mary Ann, Christian, John, and Daniel Black. They migrated to North Carolina after 1831. Malcom Black married Jannet McNeill on 24 April 1849, in Cumberland County, NC. In the 1850 Census of Austin County, Texas, Malcom Black a 30 year old male born in Scotland, is living with Janet Black a 25 year old female born in North Carolina. In the 1860 Census of Austin Co., TX is M. Black, a 45 year old male born in Scotland; J. Black, a 35 year old female born in N.C.; M. Black, a 6 year old male born in Texas; J. Black, a 4 year old male born in Texas; and Jane Black, a 1 year old female born in Texas. Also in the 1860 Census of Austin Co. TX  living in a different dwelling is Jane Black a 83 year old female born in Tennessee. Living next door to Malcom Black and his family  was James Boyd, a 38 year old male born in NC; his wife Jane Black Boyd, a er year old female born in Scotland; and their six children. Malcom Black and his family was not enumerated in the 1870 Census of Texas, In the 1880 Census of Burleson Co., TX, is Malcom Black, a 62 year old male born in Scotland; Jennet, a 57 year old female born in NC; David; their son age 18 years born in Texas; Archibald, a son age 14 years born in Texas; and Malcom Black, a son age 24 years born in Texas. Mrs. Jannet McNeill Black died 25 November 1880, in Caldwell, Burleson Co., TX. Malcom Black married Mrs. Catherine “Kate” Hoffman on 9 November 1882, in Burleson Co., TX and they had a daughter, Nannie Black. Catherine, a daughter of Dougal McGregor, and Flora A. Ray McGregor, was born 7 May 1850, in NC, and died February 28, 1920, in Chriesman, Burleson Co., TX, with burial in the Chriesman Cemetery. Malcom Black, Sr. died 8 October 1888, in Caldwell, Burleson Co., TX Malcom and Jannet McNeill Black probably are buried in unmarked graves in the Chriesman Cemetery or in Caldwell’s Old City Cemetery. Malcom Black’s known children are; Malcom, JR., David, Hiram, Archibald,  and Nannie Black.

Malcom Black, Jr., a son of Malcom and Jannet Black, was born 10 December 1854, in Austin Co., TX. He graduated from Baylor College at Independence, Washington Co., TX in 1870, from The Agriculture and Mechanical College in Brazos Co., TX in 1870, and from Union Springs Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He married Ida Shive (1858-1911) on 14 October 1884, in Georgetown, Williamson Co., TX. Mrs. Ida Black died in 1911 and is buried in the Sterling City Cemetery. Malcom Black, Jr. died 23 May 1948, in Sterling Co., TX and is buried in the Sterling City, Cemetery. Malcom and Ida Black’s known children are; Zenas Eander Black (1885-1965), Alice Valena Black (1892-1895)), Ida Rosetta Black (1895-1899), Serena Viola Black (1898-1925), and Malcom Leisure Black (1908-1918).

David S. Black, a son of Malcom and Jannet Black, was born 25 May 1861, in Austin Co., TX. He married Jane J. York on 8 December 1881, in Burleson Co., TX. Jane, a daughter of Daniel and Mary E. York, was born 23 April 1859, and died 8 December 1881, in Burleson Co., TX. David S. Black died 7 February 1944. David and Jane Black are buried in the Chriesman Cemetery in Burleson Co., TX. Their known children are; William born in 1883, Eula J. born in Nov. 1884, Mary J. born in June 1887, Archie born in 1890, and Lillie G. Black born in September 1896.

Hiram Black, a son of Malcom and Jannet Black, was born about 1864 in Texas. He was living with his parents in Burleson Co., TX during the 1880 Census, No records for Hiram after 1880.

Archibald Black, a son of Malcom and Jannet Black, was born about 1866 in Texas. He was living with his parents during the 1880 Census. No records for Archibald found after 1880.

Nannie Black, a daughter of Malcom and Catherine Black, was born 11 January 1885, in Burleson Co., TX. She married Robert T. Hill (1877-1920) in Burleson Co., TX. Nannie Black Hill died in June 1950. She and Robert Hill are buried in the Chriesman Cemetery in Burleson Co., TX.

Mary Ann Black was born 7 August 1820, in Ayrshire, Cumberland County, North Carolina. She married James G. Boyd on 20 June 1844, in Cumberland Co., NC. James Boyd was born in 1822 in South Carolina and died in Austin County, Texas. In the 1850 Census of Cumberland Co., NC, in dwelling #940 is James Boyd, a 26 year old male born in SC; Mary, a 26 year old female born in Scotland; and their children all born in NC; Sarah A., a 4 year old female; William, a 2 year old male; twins Hugh B. and John B. one year old males. In dwelling #941 is Nancy Black, a 55 year old female born in Scotland; John Black, a 20 year old male born in Scotland; and Daniel Black, a 18 year old male born in Scotland In the 1860 Census of Austin Co., TX, in dwelling #878 is Malcom Black, a 45 year old male born in Scotland; his wife Jannet and their three children. In dwelling #879 is James Boyd, a 36 year old male born in SC; his wife Jane, a 35 year old female born in Scotland; and their children; William, a 17 year old male born in NC; twins George and John, 10 year males born in NC; James, a 7 year old male born in Texas; and Ann Boyd, a one year old female born in Texas. Mary Boyd, a female age 59 born in Scotland was living with her children; John age30 born in NC; Mary Ann age 23 born in Texas; and James Boyd age 20 born in Texas in dwelling #278 in the 1880 Austin Co., TX Census. Mary Ann Black Boyd died 23 November 1903 in Chriesman, Burleson Co., TX, and is buried in the Chriesman Cemetery where Malcom Black’s son David Black and Malcolm’s wife Catherine Black are buried

 

 

John Gregg (1801-1848), a son of Samuel Ole Gregg and Jane Anne Black, married on 28 August 1818, in Lawrence County, Alabama. John and Sarah Gregg’s known children are; Thaddeus Gregg (1820-1841), Lucinda Gregg (1821-1851), Ellis Gregg b. 1823), Martha Gregg )b. 1825), John Gregg (b. 1826), Mary Ann Gregg (b. 1828), and William Henry Gregg (1837-1886). John Gregg left his family in Alabama, came to Coahuila y Texas, Mexico, and fought in the Texas Revolution in 1836. He returned to Alabama to move his family to the Republic of Texas. On 7 January 1841, John Gregg had ridden ahead of his family to locate a place to camp for that night Indians attacked the Gregg family west of the Trinity River killing Mrs. Sarah Gregg and a son Thaddeus Gregg,  severely injuring Ellis Gregg and took away a son Henry Gregg. Lucinda Gregg, Martha Ann Gregg, and John Gregg, Jr. hid in the bushes and survived.

John D. Black, born 15 October 1814 in Scotland, came to Texas where he married Martha Roland on 26 July 1842, in Lamar County, Texas Martha died before 1848. John Black married Lucinda Gregg, a daughter of John and Sarah Gregg, on 20 May 1848, in Burleson County, Texas. John and Lucinda Black had two children, Colmore Black and Lucinda Black. Lucinda Gregg Black was born 15 May 1821, in Lawrence Co., AL, and died 22 June 1851 in Cooke Co., TX. John D. Gregg married Margaret Ann Duty (1831-1904) on 9 February 1853, in Fanning Co., TX. And they had two children, Mary L. Black and William Phillip Black. John D. Black’s other known children are Mollie L. Black Long (5 January – 19 April 1940), and Martha Black. John D. Black died on 19 January 1857, in Cooke Co., Texas, and is buried in the Black Cemetery in Cooke Co., Texas.

 

 

On 21 June 1880, Archibald Black, a 22 year old male born in North Carolina, was living at Hookerville in Burleson County, Texas with his wife Newell Elizabeth Crane, a 17 year old female born in Texas. His mother was born in North Carolina and his father was born in Scotland. On 4 June 1900, Archibald P. Black, born in May 1858; his wife Newell, born in March 1863; and their children; A.N., a son born in October 1880; W.M., a daughter born in July 1882; and A. E., a son born in June 1885, were living in the city of Dallas, Texas. Archibald P. Black died 29 May 1919, in Dallas Co., TX, and Newell Elizabeth Crane Black died 13 March 1947, in Dallas Co., TX. They are buried in Oakland Cemetery in Dallas Co., TX. Their known children are: Archibald Newell Black (1880-1941), Nona Black Bradley (1882-1955), Robert Roy Black (1886-1955), Benjamin Franklin Black (1891-1951), and Doris Black (1900-1985).
