Flippin

 

William Flippin, a son of Thomas and Rhoda McAdoo Flippin, was born 17 May 1775, in Bedford County, Virginia, and died in 1844 in Cole County, Missouri. He married Mary “Polly” Johnson on 10 December 1797, in Warren County, Kentucky. William and Mary’s known children are; Thomas Jefferson, Nancy, and Absalom Flippin. Absalom Flippin, born about 1804 in Barren County, Kentucky, died about 1858 in Washington County, Texas. Absalom married Martha Emilia Fugitt, born about 1805 in Tennessee, on 7 August 1826, in Missouri. Absalom and Martha’s known children are; Reuben, Thomas Jefferson, John, Mahala, Andrew Jackson, Nancy, and Benjamin Flippin. Absalom, Martha, and their children were living in Washington County, Texas in 1850. Mrs. Emilia Flippin was living with her children in Washington County, Texas in 1860. Mrs. Emilia Flippin was living with her son Reuben Flippin and his wife Catherine Flippin in Burleson County, Texas on 5 August 1870.

 

Reuben Flippin, the 1st child of Absalom and Emilia Flippin, was born in January 1828 in Cole County, Missouri. He was living near Long Point, Washington County, Texas on 25 July 1860, with his mother, his wife, and three siblings. Reuben married Catherine Logsdon on 23 May 1855, in Washington Co., TX. Catherine was born 11 October, 1836, in Gasconade County, Missouri, died 18 August 1893, and buried in the Early Chapel Cemetery in Lee County, Texas. Reuben served in Company B, 20th Texas Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. Mrs. Catherine Flippin filed as an Indigent Confederate Family in Washington Co., TX. On 22 June 1900, Reuben was living with his 2nd wife Anna E. Flippin ( born in December 1864), his daughter Louisa Flippin (born in January 1878), his daughter Hester L. Flippin (born in May 1885), and with step children Ada L. Adams (born in July 1882), Alvin L, Adams (born in September 1887), and Nathan B. Adams ( born in March 1892 in Lee Co.,  TX). Ab. B. Flippin (July 1873- May!919) and Elbert Flippin (born in 1874) are thought to be sons of Reuben Flippin. Reuben Flippin is reported to have died 8 December 1905, but his memorial has not been found.

 

Thomas Jefferson Flippin, the 2nd child of Absalom and Emilia Flippin, was born about 1832 in Missouri. He married Nancy A. Tomlinson on 22 August 1855, in Washington County, Texas. Thomas served in Company B, 20th Texas Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. On 25 July 1860, Thomas and Nancy were living next door to his mother Emilia Flippin and some of his siblings in Washington Co., TX. Mrs. Nancy Flippin was born in England in 1832, died in 1883, and is buried in the Johnson Cemetery in Erath Co., TX.

Thomas married Nancy Ann Buchanan about 1884 in Erath Co., TX. She was born 2 November 1842, in Pulaski County, Georgia, died 26 February 1934, and buried in the Johnson Cemetery where Thomas and his 1st wife are buried. Thomas J. Flippin died 15 December 1894. His known children are; Mary A. (born about 1857), James Seth (born 1859), Richard (born about 1861), Thomas (born about 1864), Louisia (born about 1868), and Nancy Annie Flippin (born in 1884).

 

 

John Flippin, the 3rd child of Absalom and Emilia Flippin, was born in 1835 in Cole County, Missouri, died in 1873, and was buried in the Old Birch Creek Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas. John Flippin married Emma Adeline Overby, a daughter of John W. and Mary McGee Buchanan Overby, on 15 May 1858, in Burleson County, Texas. Emma was born on 1 September 1843, in Burleson Co., TX, died 8 August 1915, in Tarrant Co., TX, and was buried in the Upper Greens Creek Cemetery in Erath Co., TX. On 16 August 1860, John, his wife Adeline, and their son Benjamin were in Burleson Co., TX. John, his wife “Anna”, and their three children William, Ira, and Henry were living in Burleson County between the homes of his brothers Reubin and Benjamin Flippin. John and Adeline Flippin’s known children are: William Benjamin Flippin, born on 23 May 1860, in Burleson Co., TX, married Margarette Adeline Terrell on 25 July 1877, in Burleson Co., TX, died 10 September 1890,  and buried in Highland Cemetery in Wichita Co., TX. Mrs. Margarette Terrell Flippin was born on 31 August 1858, in Fayette Co., TX, died 27 May 1946, and buried in Roes Hill Burial Park in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, William and Margarette’s known children are: Eugene Walter Flippin (1878-1949), Hattie Belle Flippin Roberts (1880-1957), Margarette Flippin Walraven (1884-1971), and Ira Henry Flippin (1886-1961). After John’s death in 1873, Emma Adeline Overby Flippin married Edward A. Munford (1846-1927) on 14 October 1875, in Burleson Co., TX, and they later moved to Stephenville, Erath County, Texas.

 

Mahala J.J. Flippin, the 4th child of Absalom and Martha Emilia Flippin, was born about 1836 in Missouri. She married William T. Riley on 5 May 1858, in Burleson County, Texas.

 

Andrew Jackson Flippin, the 5th child of Absalom and Martha Emilia Flippin was born 1 August 1839, in Cole County, Missouri, married Lidia Jane Hughes on 25 January 1860, in Washington Co., TX, died 9 February 1930, and buried in the Cheetham Cemetery in Colorado Co., TX. Lydia Jane Hughes was born 26 July 1846, in Burleson Co., TX, died 30 January 1919, and buried in the Cheetham Cemetery. Andrew Flippin served as a Private in Company B, 20th Texas Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. Their known children are; Edward born about 1866, Thomas born about 1869, William Andrew born about 1871, John A. born about 1872, Mary Lee born about 1885, and Reuben Jackson born about 1887. Reuben Jackson Flippin and six of his children were burned to death in the 5 January 1919, fire that destroyed their home in Clodine, Fort Bend County, Texas.

 

Nancy Flippin, the 6th child of Absalom and Martha Emilia Flippin, was born about 1843 in Missouri. Nancy married William Tomlinson about 1863 and they lived their married life in Burleson Co., TX. William was born about 1840 in England, died 26 October 1880, and was buried in the Chriesman Chapel Cemetery in Burleson Co., TX. Nancy Flippin Tomlinson died 16 August 1890, and was buried in the Liberty Hill Cemetery in Williamson County, Texas. Their known children are : Lee Ann born 14 May 1864, married Jefferson Davis McCain (1859-1918); William Arthur born 4 November 1870; Mary Belle born about 1876; Edna S. born about 1878; Willy Harris born in January 1880; and Charles Lon Tomlinson born about 1882, died in 1890 in Tom Green Co., TX.

 

 

Benjamin Flippin, the last known child of Absalom and Martha Emilia Flippin, was born about 1846 in Missouri. He married Maggie J. Oliver on 29 March 1867, in Washington Co., TX. On 5 August 1870, Benjamin and Maggie were living in Burleson Co., TX with their two year old son Thomas. Thomas A. Flippin, the 1st child of Benjamin and Maggie Flippin, was born 12 November 1868, died 29 August 1919, and was buried in the Chriesman Chapel Cemetery in Burleson Co., TX. Reuben Oliver Flippin, the 2nd child of Benjamin and Maggie was born 3 July 1972, in Burleson Co., TX, died 25 December 1949, and was buried in the Old Birch Creek Cemetery in Burleson Co./, TX. Reuben married Martha Jane Cowen, a daughter of Absalom Riley and Lenora Maddox Cowen. Martha Jane was born 7 November 1885, in Burleson Co., TX, died 21 February 1924, and was buried in the Old Birch Creek Cemetery. Reuben and Martha Flippin’s known children are; Maude Mae Flippin Kettler (1906-1988),  Willie Lee Flippin Wiederhold (1910-2001), Alma Flippin Daniel (1913-2010), James Oliver Flippin (1916-1976), Iris Flippin McCarty (1918-1996), Claude A. Flippin (1921-1988), and Aaron L. Flippin (1923-1995). Benjamin and Maggie’s death dates and place of burial are not known.
