SANDS – RICHARDS – ARENDALE

Samuel Richard Barham Sands, son of Samuel Wright Sands and Penny Cary Morriss, was born 14 August 1822, in Halifax County, North Carolina. He married Rachel Wallace Hope, a daughter of Samuel and Francis Butt Hope, on 11 December 1845, in Davidson County, Tennessee. Rachel was born 28 December 1824, in Wilson County, Tennessee. Samuel and Rachel Sands moved from Wilson County, Tennessee to Washington County, Texas in 1857, and then to Somerville, Burleson County, Texas before 1869. Mrs. Penny Morriss Sands was living with them in the 21 June 1860, Census of Washington County, Texas and in the 1870 and 1880 Census of Burleson County, Texas. Penny Cary Morriss Sands was born 3 July 1793 in Halifax County, N.C. and died 5 April 1882, in Somerville, Burleson County, Texas. Mrs. Rachel Sands died 8 March 1899, in Somerville, and Samuel Sands died 8 February 1903, in Somerville. Mrs. Penny Sands, Mrs. Rachel Sands, and Samuel Richard Barham Sands are buried in the Sands Family Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas. Samuel and Rachel had eleven children. They are:                                                                             

1. Margaret Elizabeth Sands, born 27 December 1846, in Wilson County, Tennessee. She married Edward Leach on 20 March 1867, in Somerville, and they had one child; Margaret Leach, born 27 December 1864. Mrs. Margaret Sands Leach died 15 February 1869, in Somerville, and was buried in the Sands Family Cemetery.

2. Samuel Richard Sands was born 18 March 1848, in Wilson County, Tennessee.

3. Nancy Martitia Sands was born 4 October 1849, in Wilson County, Tennessee, and died 3 December 1900, in Somerville, Burleson County, Texas. She was buried in the Sands Family Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas. Nancy Sands married Thomas Didymus Richards on 20 March 1867, in Somerville. Thomas was born 7 March 1841 in Henry County, Alabama, and died 3 April 1916, in Washington County, Texas.  He is buried at Gay Hill, Washington County, Texas. Nancy and Thomas had six children: William Samuel Richards born 14 March 1869, Rachel Elizabeth Richards born 20 March 1871, Richard Thomas Richards born 19 May 1878, Morris H. Richards born 3 February 1881, Carrie Iola Richards born 28 October 1883, and Grover Frances Richards born 26 January 1886.

4 James Edward Sands was born in 1851 and died before 1860.

5. Thomas Barham Sands was born 11 February 1853, and died in 1878.

6.Morris Hope Sands was born 25 May 1854, in Wilson County, Tennessee, and died in 1923 in the City of Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. He married Anne A. Beckham on 22 December 1873, in Somerville, Burleson County, Texas, and they had eleven children: Louis Richard Sands, born 6 November 1874; Lonnie Hope Sands, born 25 February 1877; Marvin Morris Sands, born 11 October 1879; John Bascom Sands, born 2 August 1882; Samuel Joseph Sands, born  1 October 1884; Florence V. Sands, born 8 October 1886; Nettie M. Sands, born 10 November 1889; Emma Jean Sands, born 28 November 1892;  Robert Brooks Sands, born 30 November 1894; Rachel Lavinia Sands, born 13 August 1897; and Carrie Eunice Sands, born 12 October 1899.

7. Cary Bascom Sands was born 6 October 1856, in Wilson County, Tennessee, and died 4 February 1886. His wife was Georgia Ann Blocker.

8. Penny Francis Sands was born 10 April 1858, in Washington County, Texas, and died 14 November 1915, in Somerville. She married John Benjamin Arendale, son of John Benjamin Arendale Sr. and Ann Osgood Arendale, on 20 December 1875, in Somerville, Burleson County, Texas. He was born in 1854 and died in 1945. They are buried in Somerville’s Oaklawn Cemetery. Penny and John ‘s children are:  Blackwell S. Arendale, born 17 August 1879, died 14 December 1958;  Annie Martitia Arendale, born 9 February 1884, died 21 June 1952; Edmond Roberts Arendale, born 12 April 1885, died 22 June 1919; John Benjamin Arendale Jr., born 28 April 1887, died 28 December 1943, WW II; William Frances Arendale, born in 1889; Cary Osgood Arendale, born in 1893; Taylor Barham Arendale, born in 1894, died 1953; Marshall H. Arendale, born in 1896, died 8 July 1937; Lula Janet Arendale, born in 1899; Rosa Dement Arendale, born 14 August 1901; and Stella Gertrude Arendale.

9. Mary Louise Sands was born 25 September 1860, died 22 December 1867, and was buried in the Sands Family Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas.

10. Rachel Viola Sands was born 19 March 1863, and died 29 September 1888, in Somerville, Burleson County, Texas.

11. Edmund Tarver Sands was born 27 December 1865, died 16 September 1866, and was buried in the Sands Family Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas.
