Thomas Goodwin

 

Thomas Tulloch Goodwin was born 25 November 1810, in Louisa County, Virginia, to Archibald Tulloch Goodwin and Candice (Sandridge) Goodwin. Thomas married Winniefred Boxley, who was born 4 June 1813, in Virginia, and they had at least six children:

1.     Archibald Goodwin, born about 1836 in Virginia, married 11 October 1860, in Burleson County, Texas, to Juliette S. Crunk. He was a teacher in common schools.

2.     Laura Goodwin, born about 1840 in Louisa County, Virginia, married Joseph F. Grant on 21 November 1858, in Burleson County, Texas, and they had seven children.

3.     Thomas Tulloch Goodwin, Jr., born about 1843 in Louisa County, Virginia, was a Private in Company H, 2nd Texas Infantry, C.S.A. He was the Postmaster of Tunis, Burleson County, Texas, when it began operations on 29 March 1878. The Brazos Bottom Post Office, 1856 – 1876, preceded the Tunis Post Office.

4.     Annie Independence Goodwin, born 4 July 1848, in Louisa County, Virginia, died 1 September 1864, in Burleson County, Texas, buried in Brazos Bottom Cemetery, Burleson County, Texas.

5.     Winnifred Goodwin, born about 1849 in Caroline County, Virginia, married Woodson McGraw on 28 August 1867, in Burleson County, Texas.

6.     Mary Goodwin was born about 1850 in Caroline County, Virginia.

7.     Ralph Sandridge Goodwin, born 30 July 1853, in Caroline County, Virginia, died 11 May 1866, in Burleson County, Texas, buried in Brazos Bottom Cemetery.

Thomas, Winniefred, and their children came to Burleson County, Texas, with the 1854 Virginia to Texas Wagon Train. On 17 July 1860, they are shown in dwelling #180 as family #179 of the 1860 Census of Burleson County, Texas, receiving their mail at the Brazos Bottom Post Office. Their personal property value was $21,700.00 and their real property value was $39,495.00, and Thomas was a farmer. Winniefred “Red” (Boxley) Goodwin died 20 December 1866, and was buried in the Brazos Bottom Cemetery in eastern Burleson County, Texas. When land was deeded to the Brazos Bottom Baptist Church, on 16 January 1867, Thomas was a Church Trustee.                                                                                            Thomas T. Goodwin, Sr. married Mary Chase on 3 December 1867, in Washington County, Texas. Thomas and Mary had a son, Daniel W. Goodwin, born about 1869 in Burleson County, Texas. After the Civil War, Thomas T. Goodwin, Sr. reported his personal property value as $4,800.00 and real property value as $3,970.00 in the 27 June 1870, Census of Burleson County, Texas. Thomas Tulloch Goodwin, Sr. died 17 October 1872, and was buried in the Brazos Bottom Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas. Mrs. Mary C. Goodwin married Benjamin S. Reed on 12 July 1874, in Burleson County, Texas.
