SOME THOMAS DESCENDANTS

 

 Ezekiel Thomas II, married Nancy Jane Carothers, daughter of William and Sarah Harvey Carothers, about 1798, and they had nine children:

1. Jeremiah Watts Thomas, born 2 October 1799, in Georgia

     2.  Susan Thomas, born about 1804 in Mississippi, married James Keys

     3. Jesse Gilbert Thomas, born 11 June 1807, in Hickman County, Tennessee

     4. Pleasant Green Thomas, born about 1809 in Tennessee, married Mary Elizabeth Bourland

      5. Jane Thomas, born about 1811 in Tennessee

      6. Sallie Thomas, born about 1813 in Tennessee

      7. Dollie Ann Thomas, born about 1815 in Tennessee

      8. William Carothers Thomas, born 5 April 1817 in Tennessee

           9. John B.V. Thomas, born about 1820 in Tennessee

Ezekiel and Nancy Jane Thomas are buried in the Keyes Cemetery in Itawamba County, Mississippi.

 

Jeremiah Watts Thomas was born 2 October 1799, in Georgia, to Ezekiel and Nancy Jane Thomas. He married, 20 July 1829, in Alabama, Winnifred Dublin, daughter of Jacob and Susannah Dublin. Winnifred was born 12 November 1811. Jeremiah and Winnifred joined the Dove Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church) in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas, by letter in March 1845. Jeremiah was ordained a deacon on October 1845, in Dove Baptist Church. They were dismissed by letter on October 9, 1854. Jeremiah was a farmer and moved to String Prairie between Caldwell and Lexington, Texas. Jeremiah and Winnifred had at least twelve children:

1.     William Gilbert Thomas, born 22 October 1831, died 20 November 1831

2.     Mary Ann Thomas, born 11 November 1832, died 4 June 1834

3.     Dewitt C. Thomas, born about 1835 in Alabama, married Miss. J.L. Hewlett, 10 September 1871

4.     Susan Jane Thomas, born 11 September 1837, in Alabama, married Joseph C. Rowland, Jr. on 21 June 18i5, in Burleson County, Texas.

5.     Jessie Ezekiel Thomas, born 25 October 1839, in Mississippi

6.     Jeremiah Watts Thomas, Jr., born 22 January 1841 in Mississippi, died 18 January 1863, in Grenada Mississippi

7.     Mary Jane Thomas, born 10 April 1843, died 20 April 1843, buried Keys Cemetery, Itawamba County, Mississippi

8.     Nancy Emily Thomas, born about 1847 in Burleson County, Texas, married W.H. Griffin on 21 November 1867.

9.     Andrew Vardeman Thomas was born 29 December 1850, in Burleson County, Texas.

10.  Sarah Elizabeth “Betsy” Thomas, born 25 July 1851, in Burleson County, Texas, died 7 October 1863, buried in Prospect Cemetery which is now in Lee County, Texas.

11. Catherine Marie Thomas, born 24 September 1852, in Burleson County, Texas

12. James Stanley Thomas, born 21 February 1854, in Burleson County, Texas, died 28 October 1854, buried in Prospect Cemetery

Winnifred died 29 October 1863, and Jeremiah died 7 March 1864. They are buried in Prospect Cemetery on String Prairie in Lee County, Texas.     String Prairie, Texas, is between the East and Middle Yegua Creeks in what has been Lee County, Texas, since 1874.

 

William Carothers Thomas, Reverend, was born 5 April 1817 in Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama. He married Nancy Jane Gibson about 1837. Nancy was born 4 February 1822 in Wilkes County Georgia and died in 1888 in Dallas, Texas.  William died 29 November 1885, and was buried in the Keyes Cemetery in Itawamba County, Mississippi. Some of their children are:

Jesse Gilbert Thomas was born 11 June 1807, in Hickman County, Tennessee, a son of Ezekiel and Nancy Jane Thomas. Jesse married Eliza Jane Michaux, 4 April 1833, in Lawrence County, Alabama. Eliza Jane (Michaux) Thomas was born about 1810 in Virginia. They had at least four children:

1.     Eliza Jane Thomas, born about 1833 in Alabama

2.     Frank Thomas, born about 1835 in Alabama

3.     James B. Thomas, born about 1838 in Alabama

4.     Emily Thomas, born about 1842 in Texas

Jesse and Eliza Thomas joined Dove Baptist Church in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas, by letter on 4 May 1843. Jesse served on the first Board of Trustees of Baylor University at Independence, Washington County, Texas, in 1845. He was at Providence Baptist Church in Burleson County, Texas, in 1845. Jesse was Secretary of the Baptist State Convention in 1848 when it met on Anderson, Grimes County, Texas. Jesse was licensed to preach in September 1852 and ordained into the ministry on 16 July 1853, both in Dove Baptist Church. Mrs. Eliza Thomas died 8 July 1854, in Burleson County, Texas. Jesse was the pastor of Dove Baptist Church from 1854 through 1857. Jesse married Mrs. Sarah Ann (Hitchcock) Eldridge in 1857. Sarah was born 18 July 1821, in Georgia, a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Davis) Hitchcock and the widow of Arthur Eldridge. She had a daughter Martha M. Eldridge born about 1838 and a son Thomas Eldridge, born about 1840. 

Jesse was pastor of Dove Baptist Church again from August 1864 through July 1865. From October 1863 through August 1864, he served as a missionary to the men in the Confederate Army. He also served on several mission fields of Texas.  J.G. Thomas was shown in 1850, 1860, and 1870 census as a Missionary Baptist Clergyman. Reverend Jesse Gilbert Thomas died 11 September 1875, in Burleson County, Texas.

 

Pleasant Green Thomas was a son of Ezekiel and Nancy Jane Thomas. He was born 20 March 1809, in Hickman County, Tennessee. He married Mary Elizabeth Bourland 19 December 1839, in Itawamba County, Mississippi. Mary was born 15 November 1821, a daughter of James Spears Bourland and Mary Hudspeth, and died 16 Sept 1848, buried in Bourland Cemetery, Itawamba County, Mississippi. Pleasant Green Thomas died 23 May 1892,and is buried in College Mound Cemetery in Kaufman County, Texas. Children of Pleasant Green Thomas and Mary Bourland are:

1.     Mary Jane Thomas, born 1 November 1840, in Itawamba County, Mississippi; married Rial Barnett 8 January 1861, in Itawamba County, Mississippi;

died 14 January 1926, in Miles, Runnels County, Texas.

2.     Martha Susan Thomas, born about 1843 in Itawamba County, Mississippi; married 1st Arthur Benjamin Bullard 22 December 1863, in Itawamba County, Mississippi; married 2nd Squire Boone about 1867; married 3rd Joseph Carroll Rowland in 1873. She died 1 November 1880, and is buried in the Rowland Cemetery, Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas.

3.     James Ezekiel Thomas, born about 1845 in Itawamba County, Mississippi; married W.A. Bourland 27 October 1885, in Itawamba County, Mississippi.

4.     William Green Thomas, born March 1847 in Itawamba County, Mississippi; married Sarah Jane Kimbrough 8 May 1872, in Carroll County,

Mississippi.

Descendants of William Madison Thomas

 

William Madison Thomas was born 20 January 1763 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and died 27 November 1835 in Franklin County, Georgia. He married Agnes Nancy Carothers, a daughter of William and Sarah Harvey Carothers, on 19 January 1792 in Elbert County, Georgia. Agnes was born about 1774 in North Carolina and died 13 February 1862 in Franklin County, Georgia. William and Agnes are buried in the Thomas Family Cemetery in Banks County, Georgia. The children of William and Agnes Thomas are:

1.Elizabeth Thomas, born 27 February 1793 in Georgia; married William James Mayes on 6 April 1814 in Franklin County, Georgia; and died 18 January 1871 in Cobb County, Georgia. They are buried in the Mayes – Sewell Cemetery in Cobb County, Georgia

2. Joel Thomas was born 23 October 1794 in Georgia and died 20 February 1880 in Franklin County, Georgia. He married Isabella “Izzy” Mayes on 2 October 1817 in Franklin County, Georgia. She was born in November 1795 in Union District of South Carolina and died on 28 August 1894 in Banks County, Georgia and was buried in the Thomas Family Cemetery in Banks County, Georgia.

3. Lewis Thomas was born 8 December 1796 in Franklin County, Georgia and died 4 November 1885 in Cobb County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth Ash on 11 November 1821. She was born 26 December 1800 in York County, SC, and died 8 August 1882 in Cobb County, Georgia. Lewis and Elizabeth are buried in The New Hope United Methodist Cemetery at Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. Their daughter Barthena Amanda Thomas was born 3 March 1837 in Cobb County, Georgia; married Isaac Parks Sewell (1837-1913; had seven children; and died 9 August 1916.

4. Ezekiel Thomas was born 6 September 1792 and died 17 November 1853. He married Sarah Montgomery on 29 January 1826.

5. William M. Thomas was born 23 October 1800 in Franklin County, Georgia and died about 1880. He married Susan Elizabeth Burk on 28 July 1831 in Green County, Georgia. Susan is a daughter of Charles and Sarah O’Neal Burk. Susan was born in December 1814 in Green County, Georgia and died 24 January 1904 in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. On 1 November 1837, William received a 640 acre Land Grant from the Republic of Texas in present Burleson County, Texas. He was at Nacogdoches, Texas on 11 April 1839. William joined the Dove Baptist Church in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas by letter on 21 December 1844. In October 1854, letters of dismissal were granted to W.M. Thomas, James Madison Thomas, Josephine Thomas, and to Ural and Clarissa Bailey. On 24 February1856, James Thomas, Wm. Thomas and son Richard Thomas along with Ural Bailey and Andrew Mayes were in Angelina County, Texas. In August 1856, William Thomas was Justice of the Peace on Beat #3, Angelina County, Texas. William M. Thomas left his family in 1858, first moving to Nacogdoches County, and then to San Augustine County, Texas. On 9 August 1860, he was a day laborer for William Daniel, living in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and receiving his mail at the Chireno, Texas Post Office. He filed for divorce in January 1861. The children of William M. and Susan Burk Thomas are:

a. Mary Adeline Thomas was born about 1832 in Georgia.  She joined the Dove Baptist Church in Caldwell, Texas by baptism in October 1847. Mary married Andrew G. Mayes on 22 September 1853 in Burleson County, Texas. Andrew F. Mayes was a Private in Company F, 13th Texas Cavalry, CSA, and died 19 October 1862 of disease in Arkansas.

b. James M. Thomas was born in July 1833 in Georgia, a son of William M. Thomas. James and his sisters, Josephine and Sarah Thomas, joined the Dove Baptist Church in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas in July 1851. James married Miss. Sarah Elizabeth Flanagan 8 December 1870, in Burleson County, Texas. Sarah was born 30 January 1838, in Georgia, a daughter of Alexander Jackson Flanagan and Abigail Briton Tippen.  James M. Thomas was a sergeant in Company A, Wauls Texas Legion, CSA. Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Flanagan Thomas died 1 April 1875, and James M. Thomas died in December 1919. They are buried in Providence Cemetery in Burleson County, Texas. James and Sarah had at least three children:

1.     Susan Thomas, born about 1872, married 1st James B. Walling, and married 2nd John Craddock.

2.     William Thomas, born October 1873 in Burleson County, Texas

3.     Sarah Elizabeth “Lizzie” Thomas, born February 1875, married W.C. Hewitt.

 

c. Sarah Thomas was born about 1835 in Georgia.

d. Josephine E. Thomas was born about 1837 in Georgia. She married Edward J. Nolley on 22 December 1857 in Angelina County, Texas, and was  living in Houston, Harris County, Texas in 1886.

e. Richard Thomas was born about1841 in Texas.

f. Ann Thomas was born about 1846 in Texas.

g. Martha J. Thomas was born in July 1849 in Texas, married Robert S. Rains about 1875, and lived in Houston County, Texas.

h. Catherine “Kate” D. Thomas was born about 1850, married 1st John C. Fagan, married 2nd James Hicks on 31 December 1891 in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas, died 6 December 1936, and was buried in the East Hill Cemetery, Palestine, Anderson County, Texas.

i. Nancy P. Thomas was born about 1852 in Texas, married 1st Augustus Ratteree on 14 September 1871 in Angelina County, Texas, and married 2nd Mr. G.C. Cox about 1877.

6. Sarah “Sallie” Thomas was born 22 December 1802 in Georgia and died 20 October 1900 at Harmony Grove, Jackson County, Georgia. She married John Rogers III on 19 October 1837 in Franklin County, Georgia. John was born 26 October 1789 and died 29 April 1853 in Jackson County, Georgia. Sarah is buried in the Thomas Family Cemetery in Banks County, Georgia.

7. Mary Thomas was born 3 February 1805 in Georgia. She married William Phillip Pruitt on 7 December 1835 in Franklin County, Georgia.

8. Ann Caruthers Thomas was born 18 July 1808, married Henry Mize on 27 July 1837, and died 18 July 1891.

9. Madison Harvey Thomas was born 31 August 1810 in present Banks County, Georgia, and died 9 June 1883. He married 1st Nancy Francis Shelton on 28 February 1836 in Franklin County, Georgia and married 2nd Martha Ann Williams.

10. John Wilburn Thomas was born 26 February 1814 in Georgia and died in 1839 in Texas.

John Curtis Thomas was born 15 December 1844, in Georgia. He was reported to have gone to Texas looking for his brother. Informant did not know the brother’s name of if he found him. Having been born in Georgia, John probably is related to the William Madison Thomas family, but how? John married Susan Elizabeth Coleman 13 March 1873, in Burleson County, Texas. She was born in March 1853, in Mississippi, a daughter of William J. Coleman. John and Susan had at least eleven children all born in Burleson County, Texas:

2.     John Thomas, born about 1875

3.     Nancy E. Thomas, born about 1877

4.     Mary Thomas, born in March 1879

5.     Tom Thomas, born in January 1881
