Thomas Rufus King

Thomas Rufus King, a son of Miller and Sarah King, was born 12 September 1796, in Kentucky. He married Sarah Valliant on 30 January 1821, in Madison County, Alabama. Sarah was born 30 January 1796, in Maryland, a daughter of Robert Spencer Valliant and Martha Hurlock Valliant. Thomas and Sarah lived in Tennessee, Alabama, and in Marshall County, Mississippi before they and some of their children moved to Burleson County, Texas. They had at least nine children; Perry D. King, Armilda King, James Miller King, Nancy King, Martha King, Robert W. King, and three unknown sons. Thomas died between 1850 and 1860. His wife Sarah died 14 January 1892, and is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Caldwell, Burleson County, Texas.

Perry D. King was born 9 November 1821, in Alabama. He was a private in Company G, 2nd Texas Infantry, C.S.A. Apparently he never married. Perry died 15 July 1885, and is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Caldwell.

Armilda King was born about 1823 in Alabama. She married Fielding Lloyd Webster about 1840 in Jackson, Mississippi and their children are William E. Webster, Martha E. Webster, Fielding A. Webster, Sallie Rhoda Webster, Mollie Webster, Shekels Webster, and Narcissa Webster. On 20 June 1860, Armilda Webster age 36, Sarah Webster age 10, and Narcissa Webster age 8 were living in Burleson County, Texas with Armilda’s mother Sarah King.

James Miller King was born 18 September 1824, in Alabama. He came to Texas about 1852. James married Lydia Amazing Cottingham on 27 September 1854, in Burleson County, Texas. Their children are Matilda C. (Kate) King, Lenora King, and Mary A. King. During the Civil War, James served in Baylor’s Rangers, C.S.A.. Mrs. Lydia A. King died 29 July 1865, and is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Caldwell. James’ second wife was Mary A. born about 1844 in Texas. James and Mary’s children are Samantha King, James R. King, Perry T. King, John and William Lovelace King, twins. James married Mrs. Susan Holster on 20 September 1881, in Burleson County, Texas. James Miller King died 28 December 1903, and is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Caldwell. He was survived by three sons and four daughters; James M. King, Perry King, William King, Mrs. P.H. (Kate) Simpson, Mrs. J.H. Vanmeter, Mrs. A.G. Jenkins, and Mrs. T. F. Gilley; and by a sister Mrs. Martha Jackson of Richmond, Texas, and a brother R. W. King of Caldwell. James was a member of the Methodist Church and a Master Mason.

Nancy King was born about 1825 in Alabama.

Martha King was born 24 March 1830, in Huntsville Alabama. In 1850, she married Andrew Hartgraves and to them five children were born.  Mr. Hartgraves died in Natchez, Louisiana in 1857. Five years later (1892) Martha married J.M. Jackson and they had two children, a son and a daughter. In the 14 June 1880, Census of Burleson County, Texas in dwelling #200 was: Jackson, John M. age 50, born in Alabama; Jackson, Martha age 49, born in Alabama; Hartgraves, James R. age 23, stepson, born in Texas; Hartgraves, R.T.J., age 16, stepson, born in Texas; and King, Samantha, age 10, niece, born in Texas. Martha King Jackson died 29 September 1907, and is buried in the Old City Cemetery in Caldwell.

Robert W. King was born in 1835 in Tennessee. He married Sarah Jane Pollock on 14 January 1867, in Burleson County, Texas. In the 23 June 1880, Census of Burleson County, Texas in dwelling #284 was: King, R.W. age 43, brick mason, born in Tennessee; King, Sarah age 37, wife, born in Alabama; King, Nancy age 9, daughter, born in Texas; King, Mary A. age 6, daughter, born in Texas; and King, Charles S. age 3, son, born in Texas. Mr. King died in 1911. His wife Sarah was born in 1843 and died in 1925. They are buried in Caldwell’s Masonic Cemetery.

Perry, James, and Robert W. King were brick masons.
