Mrs. H. ANDREWS recently moved to El Campo, Wharton County, where her husband has been buying cotton for past season. [Lyons]

W. B. BATES and F. J. PAMPELL dissolved their partnership and divided their stock of general merchandise.

 J. F. KRENCEK sold his whiskey stock to A. POLANSKY and his stock of beer to J. RANPACH. He will in future act as agent for Texas Brewing Company.

 Lee HENSLEE, late assistant postmaster at Lyons has accepted clerkship with W. B. BATES.

 Jesse LYON, who has spent holidays at home returned to Georgetown to resume his studies.

 Last Monday, pupils returned to Mrs. HINE’s school.

 Jim WOOD and Miss Kate DUNN, who spent holidays at Hix, returned to their schools.

 Miss Etta DALLAS of Young County visited with her cousin, Miss Louella MAYES and returned to Gause last Friday. [Hix]

 Miss Jesse GILCHRIST went to visit at Gause.

 Rufus HOFFMAN of Yellow Prairie was hired by Mr. MATEJOWSKY as a general hand and clerk for another year.

 Mrs. Mattie FRAIM of Milano was visiting at Hix.

 Miss Allie DUSK left for her former home at San Marcus. All including Will BAIN will miss her.

 Some young man whose name we could not spell, came from Kosse Sunday and took Miss Frankie WEBB to be his wedded wife. They were married at the residence of the bride.

 Bennie JACKSON left for Waco to resume his studies.

 Mr. WHITNEY & family of Galveston, who have been visiting brother George, will remain here another year.

 Mr. MULKY has moved from Hix to Smokey Row.

 Mrs. LOVE gave an entertainment for her grand daughter, Misses Inez and Mamie WOOD, who are visiting her.

 Fate BREVORD returned home to Belton after spending holidays with best girl at Yellow Prairie.

 Len CLINTON, who was visiting his best girl, has returned to Mumford.

 Mrs. Jeff HOLT is visiting her sister, Mrs. DICKERSON of Cameron.

 Calvin HOLT and Kinse JOHNSON visited Cameron.

 Little FULLER and Everet JOHNSON spent Christmas with cousins, Tommie and Bob THOMPSON.

 Ex-Governor L. S. ROSS died. He had been a brigadier general in Confederate army, a member of the 6th Texas. He was called the “Hero of Corinth.”

 At Yellow Prairie, George JOHNSTON and Miss Mamie PHILP were married.

 While at a party at residence of William WATSON of Hogg, John WILKERSON and George LONG, both had their fairly new saddles cut almost to pieces by some unknown scoundrels.

 Miss Verge JONES DIED Dec. 14th at home. She graduated from college in 1896. She was taken ill at art class in Palestine and brought home. She leaves a devoted father.

 Edgar SIMPSON and Mr. DUEWALL of Cooks Point both lost horses and found them promptly with advertisements in newspaper.

 Waco, Jan. 6:  Baptist Standard,  Dr. J. B. CRANSFILL’s paper will soon be published in Dallas. Mr. C. C. SLAUGHTER, wealthy gentleman of that city will purchase ½ interest.

 J. W. ADAMS of Caldwell and Miss Zee IRELAND of Conroe were married at Conroe last week. They will reside on ADAMS’ farm near Copperas Hollow.

 Rev. John S. TANNER of Baylor University will preach at Baptist Church next Sunday.

 Miss Stella BATTE of Maysfield, Milam County, who has been visiting Mrs. Tom BROADDUS returned home.

 Rev. Jeff RAY went to Goldwaithe to assist with meeting, for a few days.

 Sam SIMMONS, who has been employ of T. J. NEWCOMB has moved his family to Georgetown.

 A. D. RUST, Jr. was in Bryan a few hours last Tuesday. The balance of the day he was doing his best to ride a buggy over the roughest stretch of road in America. [Highway 21]

 Will DEAN & wife of Smithville were visiting relatives in Caldwell.

 Mr. DICKINSON of Cedar Creek, while loading some lumber, his team became frightened by an approaching train and started on a run. The lumber was deposited in small installments, but no serious damage was done.

Dr. B. C. CRAWFORD of Georgetown was in town working in the interest of Knights of Honor.

The barbershop of Paul BRAVENEC was moved from corner into newly partitioned room, cut off from room occupied by G. COLBERT, as a cotton sample room.  The corner was opened into one large room occupied by E. G. & J. W. JENKINS for a soda fountain, etc. Baker Ernest KLINGBEIL moved in to the former confectionery stand of Al FARMER. He has gone into partnership with Theodore SULLIVAN.

J. D. STOKES has purchased the last unoccupied store in the HUDSON block. [in Caldwell]

Mrs. Eliza VENABLE of Belton, sister of W. T. NELSON, of this county died last Thursday, December 30th. She leaves her husband, W. J. VENABLE, and a niece, Miss Annie WATSON, whom she raised, to mourn her death. Miss WATSON will remain with her uncle.

 The Caldwell News-Chronicle  published a brief article concerning an issue of the Caldwell Register, dated November 16, 1882, that someone had brought in to the newspaper office. These names were mentioned in that article:

“C. S. RUNKLE is selling sweet potatoes. He raised 65 bushels this year on ¼ acre.

Jesse HARRIS and Miss Ora REEVES were married.

Mrs. A. P. WALLIN died.

Frank DENNISON and J. L. LEMONS, appear as the proprietors of Register.”

 

JANUARY 14, 1898

Last Sunday night, J. A. ARMENDT’s beautiful dwelling at Lyons was been destroyed by fire.  He escaped and his wife & children were visiting in San Antonio.

Miss Ida COURTNEY returned from Hunt and Erath Counties.

W. A. LYON, Jr. and Miss Dettie POTEET of Washington County were married. They will live in Lyons.

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Yellow Prairie has called Rev. CAUSEY for present year.

Several members of Mr. HINES’ family are quite ill.

Frank NEELY of Hubbard City is visiting his father, Dr. NEELEY of Yellow Prairie.

Rufus HOFFMAN has employment with Mr. MATEJOWSKY.

Calvin HOLT, after visiting his father has returned to home in Crockett, Texas.

Mr. PRINCE of Caldwell was a visitor in church at Yellow Prairie.

Mr. McLEAN’s little daughter, Belmar was very sick.

Parson FREEMAN has moved from Mrs. REEVES’ place, back to farm in Brazos County and R. E. DRAPER has moved into Parson’s vacancy.

Mr. Will MITCHELL has gone to Post Oak neighborhood to serve a term for 5 – 6 months on Tom SCOTT’s farm. If he does not commit any offense, he may be pardoned. [Cooks Point]

John NORCROSS is up after being sick. He is moving into MULLINAX place near the Hunt settlement.

Waxahachie, Jan. 13: General excitement prevails here over the mysterious disappearance of the 10-year-old daughter, Jennie of James S. DAVIS. At two this morning nearly 2, 000 people were looking for her.

Last Friday, Mr. & Mrs. A. G. JENKINS had an oyster supper. The following were guests: J. S. SNOOK & wife, C. C. NELMS & wife, J. C. WOMBLE & wife, P. H. SIMPSON & wife, J. B. COBB & wife and J. W. JENKINS & wife.

Last Sunday afternoon at residence of Rev. W. E. JAMES, Emmett HESLEP and Mrs. Mary CHRIESMAN of Quarry were married.

On Sunday next, children and grandchildren of Mr. & Mrs. M. L. WOMACK will take dinner with their parents at the Caldwell House. [hotel]

E. R. JERSIG left last Saturday for Shiner, Texas to attend the golden wedding anniversary of his grandfather, S. W. FLATO. Over 60 members of the family were present.

Harry HUDSON’s barn burned. He lost his buggy and gig and a large quantity of feed.

H. D. RIPPLE and Mrs. Anna ORSAG, who resided near Deanville, were united in marriage at office of Judge E. G. BANKS, Tuesday evening at 4:30.

W. A. LYON bought part of the A. J. RADFORD stock of goods and moved them to his house where he will engage in the general mercantile business.  J. D. GIDDINGS bought the remainder of the stock.

DAUCHAK and WALENTA is the name of a new firm.

Rev. H. C. WILLIS will preach at Yellow Prairie tonight.

W. C. CARROLL of Caldwell was in Yellow Prairie Sunday.

Mrs. Kate BLACK, after two weeks with her father, D. McGREGOR and sisters of Brenham has returned home.

On account of trouble with some of his pupils, Mr. A. LOVE has closed his school at Hoskin Springs.

Several young people attended an entertainment at MR. SEIGER;s of Sand Grove community [Milam Co.] Monday night.

Mrs. NEELEY, Mr. & Mrs. WENTZELL, Miss Mary HOLT and Frank NEELEY went to Rockdale Monday.

Edna HINES died January 13, 1898 from pneumonia. She was nearly 16.

Price ALCORN, better known as “Old Uncle Prince,” a well and favorably known old darkey fell dead one day last week while hauling wood. [Birch]

M. MATEJOWSKY’s business goods are being sold out by J. K. KRENEK of Lyons.

Frank WIEBUSCH, who sustained injury some time ago in a runaway scrape with team is getting better.

Have not heard from Mr. BRENING in a long time. He was supposed to have gone to the Klondike.

Will EASLEY has been repairing the old REEVES place, 1-½ miles north of post office. Tom HOWELL is supposed to live with him.

Ed EASLEY of Caldwell, Dr. EASLEY of Birch and Mr. HOUSTON & son of Second Creek had a lively wolf chase one day.

The treasure hunters on Frank CARBON’s place on High Prairie have made some considerable holes in ground, but no treasures found.

August POEHL moved near Lyons. Bill SCHULTZ has moved to HILL place.

Christian POEHL’s 12-year-old daughter, Minnie met with a painful accident, playing with gunpowder near a heater, burning her face and hand severely.

The little boy of Mr. MEEK accidentally caught corncrib on fire.

Eugene BAILEY and Miss Josephine WILLIAMSON were married at the home of the bride last week. They will live in home on the place of Dr. & Mrs. SPARKS.

Jim MOORE from the PARKER farm in the bottom was visiting at Hix last Sunday.

Miss Mattie JONES of Wheelock is visiting her sisters, Mrs. BAIN and Mrs. DUNN.

Miss Eva LUMPKIN of Oklahoma was here [Hix] Sunday, visiting Mrs. PORTER.

Will LOVELACE was over from Mumford Sunday.

Miss Willie SPARKS went to Caldwell last week and from there, to Yellow Prairie to visit Miss Carrie THOMPSON.

J. L. LITTLE and Miss THOMAS went to Tunis, Saturday and returned with Mrs. LITTLE, who has been there some weeks.

Mrs. Dr. HILL died last Sunday.  Her first husband was Ad HARRIS, the elder brother of J. W. HARRIS and Jud HARRIS, by whom she had three children, now aged 12 to 19 years. Her husband survives her.

Sheriff CURRY arrested Ed WATSON, colored, for burglary.

Walter BROWN, who stole many items in Caldwell a few weeks ago, was arrested in Paint Rock, Concho County.

Sheriff CURRY arrested Will and John WATTS, near Clay Station, for horse theft about three months ago. One is 17 and one is 22, with a wife and two children.

Eugene BART hangs for his crimes today.

Kit JACKSON, Negro charged with robbing Henry TAYLOR, Negro, was dismissed by Judge SINKS on a writ of habeas corpus.
