The city council of Bryan has passed an ordinance making hypnotism within the corporate limits of that place a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not less that $5 nor more than $50.

A fine gray mule belonging to Judge W. J. MOORE died on the way home from Caldwell, Monday while being driven by some Negroes to a wagon. We are unable to learn the cause of the animal’s death.

Dr. L. D. LeGEAR, the veterinary surgeon, from Austin will be treating again in Caldwell at the OLIVER & SPARKS stable.

On the 19th instant, Mr. A. J. HILL and Miss Maggie Crawly were married at the residence of the bride’s sister, Mrs. Thomas HILL, of Merle.  Elder J. A. STEPHENS officiated.

MAY 28, 1897

Mrs. Nannie BARR, her 14-year-old sister, Mattie ALEXANDER and her four-year-old son were drowned about six miles from Abbott [Texas] on the 28th. The baby fell into a tank and the other two were drowned trying to rescue him.

Abilene, May 22: General John SAYLES died at his home of heart failure. He was born in New York in 1825 and came to Texas prior to Civil War. He was a Mason.

On 9th instant, a difficulty happened on James HOTLZCLAW place, about 15 miles from Cameron, in which William DAVIS was shot. The next day, Dr. E. N. SHAW, assisted by Dr. W. A. PRICE dressed his wounds. He recovered.

Capt. Tyler D. HARN, an old citizen of Waco died in that city, Saturday.

Belton, Texas: Mr. A. D. CAMPBELL was injured by his horse and he died Sunday. The Odd Fellows Lodge buried him.

On the night of Sunday, May 30th, a filly which J. D. MACK, a farmer of Hooker’s Prairie had in the pasture of the undersigned, was evidentially inhumanly killed and mutilated by unknown persons. It was found by the owner, after he saw buzzards circling and checked for the reason.

J. W. GANTT purchased the house on the property owned by D. ALFORD and is moving it to a vacant lot near the residence of Will VEASEY. Mr. ALFORD will build a new house.

C. S. WILLIAMS leaves for Crystal Springs, Mississippi, where his daughter, Miss Mabel is attending Newton Institute.

Rev. O. T. HOTCHKISS, presiding elder of Houston district and Rev. WEEMS of Huntsville district are in town.

Building on North side of square, property of E. O. JANNETT, has been torn away and replaced by neat lawn and fence.

County Clerk W. N. HESLEP was called to San Antonio to the bedside of his daughter, Miss Vickie, who was seriously ill there. Her sister, Miss Blanche accompanied her home, later.
