 Death of Mrs. W. E. James

     Mrs. Hannah E. James, wife of Rev. W. E. James, died at her home in Bowie, Texas, Tuesday morning, November 22, at 3:30 o’clock, after suffering eight weeks from an attack of asthma.  Her suffering was such that for eight weeks she had been sitting in a chair, unable to get in a reclining position, and for some time her suffering had been so intense that death was indeed a relief to the pain-racked body.

     Mrs. James was born in Wales, May 1, 1831, hence was 73 years, 6 months and 21 days old at the time of her death.  She was married to Rev. W. E. James, August, 8, 1854, and they came to America on their wedding trip, settling first in Hoboker, N.Y.  In 1878 they came to Texas and first located in Milam county, moving a year later to Burleson county and occupying their old home near Caldwell until January, 1891, when they moved to Bowie, and have made their home there since.  Last August they celebrated at their home the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.

     She was a member of the Baptist church having joined a short time after coming to America, and was a member of the church of England before leaving Wales.

     She was the mother of ten children, of whom seven are now living, five sons and two daughters: Mrs. W. T. Coffield, Bowie; G. E. James, Caldwell; Dr. A. J. James, Houston; T. O. James, Guymon, Okla.; F. W. James, Bowie, J. Wade James, Stratford, and Miss Bertha James, Bowie.  All were present during the last week of her illness and at the time of her death.

     The funeral occurred at Bowie Tuesday afternoon at 5 o’clock, and she was laid to rest surrounded by friends and loved ones who had so recently witnessed the happy reunion and anniversary for the last time.

     Mrs. James and her husband are known to nearly every person in Burleson county, and they were loved and honored by all, and the sympathy of the entire county will be extended to the aged husband in this affliction, and to the children in the death of a devoted mother.  She was a consistent Christian and lived such a life as will well merit the “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” in the happy future to which she looked forward with hope and pleasure, and the reunion that will occur there between husband and wife will be beyond all sorrow and parting.
