Relatives Being Sought for
Restoration of Allbright Cemetery
There is a
nearly abandoned cemetery located near the Harmony community.
The markers there date back to the 1800's but for the most part, no
recent graves can be found. The
cemetery is known as the Allbright Cemetery and is located on the right, just
off County Road 119 approximately three miles from the Harmony Baptist Church,
which is on Highway 36, south of Caldwell.
Some of the family names on the markers we have found include Daniel,
Allbright, Bird, Bills, Weston, Sell, Sexton, Brooks, Burt, Young, Pettis,
Green, and many others. Records
from the county courthouse relate that Sarah Denton Bird, widow of Texas Ranger
Captain John Bird, who was killed in a battle with Indians in 1839, married
William I. Allbright. Sarah and
William are buried there. Also,
George M. Weston, a Confederate veteran, is buried there.
The records show there are approximately 65-70 graves in the cemetery.
Tommy Ryan and I have been working on the logistics of restoring this
cemetery and are searching for other relatives or friends who would be
interested in helping.
A meeting and
workday is set for Saturday, April 16, at 9 a.m. at the cemetery. We will be
assessing the needs of the area and doing some work on the grounds so come
prepared to assist if you can. We
will also be having discussions on how to proceed with improvements needed in
order to be able to restore and maintain the cemetery.
Also, if you have genealogy information related to your relatives buried
in this cemetery or any information on the history of the cemetery please bring
this information. Please bring lawn
chairs and lunch will be served. We
will have an alternate site to meet in case of inclement weather.
Please let other interested relatives and friends know about the meeting.
Please call Tommy Ryan at 979 535-4719 or Marie Schoeneman at 979
272-8655 if you need additional information or have questions.
Just a few updates for those who are able to attend on Saturday--(please tell
others who may be attending):
Tommy and I have been talking about plans for Saturday and this is sort of what
we are thinking. We plan to arrive at cemetery at 9 and spend the next
couple hours assessing the conditions of the cemetery and doing what cleanup we
can at the grave sites. Then about 11:00 or 11:30 we are going to relocate
to the fellowship hall of the Harmony Baptist Church which is at Hwy 36 and CR
119. We felt this would give everyone a chance to meet, eat, and visit.
After lunch we will have a meeting to discuss future plans for the restoration
of the cemetery, etc.
We are providing lunch and drinks. Some of you have indicated you would
like to bring cookies or sweets and that is great. But don't feel
obligated--just come and enjoy.
Bring any historical information and pictures for the cemetery you may have.
You may also want to bring family history and pictures too.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Looking forward to seeing
everyone.
Thanks,
Marie
